Worship in the Melting Pot

Jesus told us to love God with ALL our hearts, minds, souls.... and that very much includes emotions. Emotions are NOT bad things! They just should not be leaders. But they are not bad companions along the way.

And music is truly a universal language. There are many styles, and different people prefer different styles. There was a time when the waltz was considered lewd...

I love the old hymns. But sometimes I have a very difficult time with some that I have not known before which have complicated melody lines. I don't think I am the only one -- everyone seems to tone down a bit and struggle with some of them! And our church is mostly older folk.

But then "Open My Eyes" or one of the choruses which are based on Scripture ("As A Deer," and such) will end up with voices raised in song with sureness and joy.

They each seem to have their place.

There are some 'old' hymns which simply do not seem to be theologically accurate from what I can see. The same with some of the modern choruses.

The only thing I really have a problem with, even when the theology is right, is when the music is used for entertainment rather than worship.

But when the music and words help me focus on the Lord with my emotions as well as my intellect, I don't find that to be bad at all. Singing with joy is a good thing! Music is a gift from Him.

Annsni, I am far closer to your view than to Aaron's. But....what I have noticed is that you SEEM to equate music and worship.
There are many other acts of worship such as prayer, giving, and reading Scripture.
I think that it is problematic to divide a church service into two sections only - "worship" and the sermon - and have the "worship" just mean singing. Too often the "worship" leader is essentially the song leader. And there is so much more involved in worship.

Karen - I definitely see giving, prayer, serving and Scripture as worship too. As I said, sitting and watching an awesome sunset sets my heart to worship - watching the baptisms today in church so raised me to worship - I just praised God for His faithfulness when I heard the testimonies of those being baptized (we have them write out their testimony and they're read just before they're baptized). We had a deaf couple who had an awesome testimony - God is so good!!

I agree that the worship leader is often the song leader. My DH has a heart for worship and will soon be taking over all the worship at our church - and we have been talking about what he wants to do - and how he wants to take over one whole Sunday to teach what true worship is all about - not just a couple of hymns or choruses. I think it's easy to equate the two - but it's so much more than that. He really wants to renew the vision of worship being more than just songs. As Matt Redman says "I'll bring you more than a song, for a song in itself is not what You have required. You search much deeper within, from the way things appear, you're looking into my heart! It's all about You, Jesus - and all this is for you - for Your glory and Your fame - it's not about me, as if You should do things my way - You alone are God and I surrender - to Your way."

It has a slow contemporary tune.

I may tape it this weekend...
Sadly, I don't know how to write music, but I can play the guitar. (self taught)
And even with that, there are a couple chords in the song that I don't know the name of.
I found them accidently, and they sound good.

If I tape it, I will send you a copy if you would like.
I still don't know how to convert cassette tape to MP3... If I did, I would post to esnips.

Man I sound like an idiot!

Tim - That sounds like an awesome song and one I definately want to hear.

You don't sound like an idiot at all!! LOL!! You have a heart for the Lord and THAT is what God desires! He's not looking for musical perfection or a properly written out score. You did an awesome job from what I can see!!

I can't take much credit..
David wrote it first.
I just rearranged some verses and made some of it rhyme.
I even looked at some other Bible versions of the Psalm for ideas.
I think I used every verse in Psalm 67 in one way or another.
So the real writer is David.
I just adapted it for today.

I have had this tune in my head for over 19 yrs. but never had the words to go with it.

If I can figure out how to make it an MP3 I will post the song on esnips.
Gimme a couple weeks to figure out how.

The immediate hostile response of those promoting the new worship might be a clue to the rest of us that Masters has touched the heart of the matter.

He's talking about himself...his was the first hostile remark in this thread.
To start a topic to deliberately cause dissention among the brethren is wrong, to say the least... there used to be a word that describes that type person, but .....

Aaron, if you really wanted to discuss this book, why not put the topic in the book forum of the board? But instead you put it here to cause dissention, and accuse those of us that refuse to listen to your "wisdom" of not knowing what worship is.

You praise God the way you want, and I will praise Him how I want.
As long as it is in Spirit and Truth, He accepts it.
