Would an All-White Professional Basketball League Be Legal?

If they were paid - no I do not believe that a hiring policy based on race alone would be legal.

It's a hypothetical question anyway.

Where would they ever find enough white guys that could actually play to form an entire team anyway?

It should be legal as long as it doesn't use any public facilities, collects fees, admissions, or require any business licenses.

Maybe it should organize as the Church of White Basketball.

Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 prohibits employers with at least 15 employees from discriminating in employment based on race.

I know back when Boston won their first NBA championship with Larry Bird after some time without a championship all wasn't well. Some groups in Boston were getting all over them for not having enough black players. I was reading some where last year that some groups are upset at many of the NBA teams going after European players saying it wasn't fair.

Folks. there are reasons for an integrated NBA. Money, do they really want to ignore a large share of the potential market? Talent. how many whites are there that can play NBA level ball?

Other questions are who'd want to play in such a league and who's rent them facilities? Guys face it this is 2010 not 1910 or even 1950.

I don't see why not.

Miss Black America is legal. United Negro College Fund is legal. Black Congressional Caucus is legal.

Maybe, but given all of the black oriented things black people are allowed to have, why not have something for white people?
Those types of things stemmed from the times of segregation (legal, and later, defacto). By now, they really do not have that reason to exist anymore, but have probably become traditions that a lot of people likely don't want to give up since it's been around so long. They weren't built around the negative exclusion of other groups; hence, they never took on the negative connotations of white groups.

What would be the purpose of white counterparts to those things now? (Generally, each European ethic group does have its cultural events, which are divided according to the nationality rather than the skin color, while the entire black race was distinguished a single group for a long time, though now some of its ethic divisions have taken on separate cultural identities, such as West Indians).

The legal system banned segregation in private clubs such as the Elks on the basis of liquor licenses. Having a liquor license gives the government the obligation and right to regulate behavior. If the SBC should form a Baptist Bulls Club, which didn't sell any regulated products and didn't have any paid employees you you would have an interesting case for a segregated club, especially if it had only state organizations and no national officers.

SAY WHAT?

By what authority does the govt have to regulate behavior? The American Legion sells alcoholic, yet they discriminate based on veteran status. Will the govt come in and say a church cant sell food because it discriminates in its membership; how about the girl scouts - they do not allow boys to join...and the list goes on and on.

I am just getting fed up with the govt trying to regulate the behavior of its citizens.

Shades of the Springbok Rugby tour in the seventies...it was an All White South African team.....it helped focus world attention on the country and helped bring about a massive change......

:applause:

Frankly I can't understand the desire to even ask or discuss this question.
