I have seen now for several years this idea that we can "set up democracy" any where in the world where we don't like the way the country is run. We are now in the process of forcing our culture on Iraq but I have a question:
What if another country (any one, you name it) decided to attack our soil to overthrow our wicked government so that they could stop the abortion of babies??? Would they not be justified using the same set of standards that we want to force on the rest of the world???
BTW, I am not saying I think they would be right or wrong..I just wan't to know what you think and how you would react to such a feat.
Would another contry be justified attacking the US?

I would react to such a feat by taking up arms and shooting the invaders.
I'll fight to outlaw abortion at the ballot box, even though most seem content to let it stand as is. -
I want everyone especially white America (The Majority) to realise that in 1976-78 they had to Police Escort Black and Hispanic Children to school in Boston, because the white parents did not want there children schooling with Ethnic children. And don't get me started about Virginia!

Maybe they didn't like bussing children to far-away schools in order to enforce government-imposed racism.
Not that that is the slightest excuse to threaten the children, which is despicable. -
INteresting points. Of course my main point of all of this is not that I think another country should do that but to point up that we need to get our own problems fixed and not worry about the rest of the world.
-
To that extent I agree. I wonder it Iraq and Afghanistan will now legalze abortion.

The premise is wrong. The US has not "'set up democracy' any where in the world where we don't like the way the country is run." There are many countries in which the US has not intervened.
Neither are "We are now in the process of forcing our culture on Iraq." The Iraqi people are setting up their own government. In fact, some here were distressed that the US might let them institute Muslim law as their governing laws, a clear sign that we are not doing what your post alleged. The Iraqi culture will still be the Iraqi culture.
As for invasion of the US, it won't happen. We should all work to outlaw all abortions without exception. Sad to see that Judge Pickering is retiring because of the unconstitutional filibusters of the Dems in the Senate. Bush was right when he said Pickering's treatment was a disgrace. -

It's difficult, because my American brothers are the ones who have been placed in their sights, and I have an obligation and desire to side with them. But It's hard to blame anyone for fighting invaders.
-
So the fact that people were being killed by Hussein doesn't matter? I am not trying to be provocative, but I am seriously curious. You take a great and admirable stand for the lives of unborn children, and say we should do everything we can to save them ... and we should. But do the lives of Iraqis that are being killed not matter equally as much?
I am curious as to what exactly your thinking is on this. -
The point is, if my country were to be attacked, I would fight the invaders because no matter what we have done wrong here, it is our resposibility to take care of that.
If I see a father that lets his kids go to any movie they want to and I disagree, do I have the right to come over and tell him how to run his home? Even if I think he is wrong? No I don't.
The point is, if we are justified to attack Iraq, then Elngland or France is justified to attack us....and if we are to be consistant, we should applaud the invader who wants to "set free" the unborn.
The end does NOT justify the means. overthrowing God's delagated authority isn't right. -
One of the points of this thread, I think, is why we think we have the moral right or obligation to invade other countries over killing of their people, while our own government sanctions the killing of 3800 of our most innocent each day.
Jesus taught about getting your own house in order before telling others how to run theirs. I think that is a good principle for nations as well as individuals. -
And, what Dale said.

I don't disagree with either of you, in many regards. I do think there is a place for the international community to step up in some of these cases, such as Germany in WWII. Whether Iraq fits that or not I guess is a point of debate. I tend to think it does, but I understand we can't be the world's policement. I also tend to think that if you address one of these every now and then, it sends a message that people listen to and changes their behavior.
I do think there is an inconsistency in our own nation. But being in wrong in one area does not give us permission to be wrong in others. And politicians, by nature are inconsitent. Sometimes, the complexity of a situation demands different responses as well. There is no "one size fits all" policy, IMO. -

I guess the stories I heard about 1000 dead American soldiers and thousands wounded for life were made up. I'll check my sources more carefuylly in the future.

Isn't it true Jim that the majority of recent deaths are Iraqi police and soldiers that are defending their own country? That seemed to be what John was saying.

As sad as that is it was over 20 years ago. Let it go and move on.
