Would You Pay a Mileage Tax?

This is not a new idea being tossed around in Caifornia, and if it was to be passed in a municipality it could eventually become a statewide initiative.

How do you feel about this, and would you pay this type of tax to maintain the ro you use?

Once again I can't answer your poll because my choice is not one of the options. Also, the question in the thread title and the actual poll question are different questions, which is confusing.

Yes, I would pay a mileage tax if it REPLACED the per gallon gas tax. If the mileage tax was added alongside the current gas tax, then no, I wouldn't want to pay it.

Did not vote because there will be no choice if it goes into effect unless you stop driving and that is not possible for many.

It is STUPID and all the other words that come to mind to put into effect any new system of collection when they already have the gas tax - raise it and be done with it if that is what they want to do.

Most of the systems I've heard of to collect these new taxes would require expenditures for the government as well as the driver. Not to speak of the vast bureaucracy that would be needed.

The intrusion upon the public of tracking/government equipment in the car etc. is another topic.

Have the government put a gps bug on every car? I think not!

IF the purpose of the gas tax is to support roads then the logical approach is a tonnage fee on every vehicle, banning or a very high tax on studded tires, and reducing and enforcing axle tonnage limits. This would cut road costs at least in half.

When laws are submitted for approval or taxes are raised, no one asks our permission for or opinion about any of it. What "we the people" want is unimportant to politicians who have their own agenda.

No. And, it's just another way to "control" us. Every plan they come up with is for them to have more power and control. It's called abuse.

As far as I'm concerned I already pay a "milage" tax every time I fill my tank. That is what gas taxes are for. If the locals aren't getting their share they need to complain to those who are collecting and not sharing the wealth.

We are already on schedule for a Tax on Thin Air (aka the Cap and Trade Bill; aka the Carbon Footprint Tax which I calculated at $1500/year for my household).

What is the present gas tax being used for?

Conferences in Hawaii??

107 Games of Golf?

Endless international junkets?

Why don't we just sign over the pay check to the lords and ladies of the Inner Beltway?

The fuel tax we now pay carries with it the incentive to drive efficiently, including choosing more fuel efficient vehicles.. It fairly taxes us proportionally as to how much fuel we consume.. Simple to raise the tax if needed..

This new mileage tax would be very costly initially, and would be fraught with needless collection complexity, and be very intrusive federally.. It would remove the obvious incentive to drive more efficient vehicles.

Funny how this society has come to the point of funding so very many social programs which are not constitutionally "enumerated powers", but have no money to fix highways, which are constitutionally proper.

I would not vote for such, but because we are no longer a government of the people by the people and for the people I seriously doubt it will be something we get a chance to decide and it will be forced on us or we could walk.
