One of my computers is back from the shop and needs to be set up again.
All my computers are now VISTA. I had an email from an IT guy (who was slow as Christmas getting back to me the first time) with a link from the Windows site for an XP emulator (I think) that allows me to use my older programs.
I can't find the email for anything.
Any of you have an idea what I'm looking for. I've been digging around the Windows Vista site - I'm pretty sure that's where the download was, but I just can't find anything that looks right.
xp emulator??

I'd love to find it too! One of my favorite old Bible programs will run on my daughter's Vista, but mine is 64 bit (whatever that is) and it won't run.
I'm also trying to find out if I can change my 64 bit to 32 bit so I can run some of my other programs. -

The only major benefit of running a 64-bit OS is it can make use of larger amounts of memory (3.5GB+). All other improvements are very modest. Vista 64-bit has a 32-bit emulation layer by default, so all 32-bit applications (not drivers though) should run just fine. What it doesn't support are 16-bit applications. You could downgrade to a 32-bit version of Vista since nearly all 64-bit processors are backward-compatible with 32-bit x86 instructions.
To run 32-bit applications in compatibility mode, just right click them, click properties, and then select the compatibility tab.
I don't think there's an official 16-bit emulator in Vista 64-bit. But if you want to set up a virtual machine with XP installed, you can do that. I use VMWare Server (free). -
This article should help:

MC, the program that Mac users are running to let them use Windows OSes on their Macs is also available called Parallels.
Also, MS makes Virtual PC that does the same thing. -
Thanks to all.
I tried the compatibility and it didn't work.
Dale, I've seen the virtual PC - won't run on my computer. I have Vista Home. I am going to try it on another though that has ultimate.
Looking at the parallels - looks like it's only for Macs to run PC software on. (unless I'm missing something which is entirely possible.) -
VMware Workstation
They give a 30-day trial. -

I recently bought an OEM copy of XP Home SP3 from newegg.com for $89.
We tried Vista and didnt like it so we just installed XP again. The installation process reformats and overwrites the Vista automatically so it was pretty easy.
This may not be the answer for you, but it worked for us and for a modest price.
