The problem with the words liberal and conservative is that there is a great deal of difference in how they're used by different people. A lot of people think that political liberals are theological liberals and that simply isn't true. Political conservatism used to include being both fiscally and socially conservative but I seriously doubt if anyone thinks GW Bush is a fiscal conservative.
We either need to come up with more descriptive terms, or better still quit labelling people and treat them as individuals. Actually, that's the Christian way.

The words are not so hard or confusing. Jessie Helms was a conservative, and Ted Kennedy is a liberal. Anything not true or accurate about that?

Since I can't seem to find my ten and eleven foot poles, this morning, I'll toss in my two pence. Bunyan, actually there is, to answer your question- more than one. First, off despite efforts by some of his detractors to bury him, retired Sen. Jesse Helms IS a conservative, if I accept the 'pigeonhiole' usages, which I don't. I'd suggest he would probably be annoyed to be covered with soil by shovel while still breathing. I know I would. Nor will I classify Sen. Edward Kennedy as a liberal, even with these labels, for 'socalist' is more descriptive, IMLTHO. I think that, here at least, StraightAndNarrow, like Pres, Jimmy Carteer has "hit the nail with his head", dead center, or something like that. (FTR, I neither voted for President Carter, either time he ran, nor do I agree (or disagree) with him on all points, either in the religious or political spectrum. But I find something interesting. In the last 25 years, four openly, clearly, and publically 'Evangelical', (even to the point of making it something of an issue) Christians sought national elected office. That is not to say that others were not also 'Evangelical', who did not profess it so openly. I'm not here judging, by any stretch. Three were elected , one twice, and the other two defeated on the second try, and one not elected at all, here. They were John B. Anderson (R/I), not elected President 1980; Jimmy
Carter (D), elected Pres. 1976, def. 1980; Dan Quayle (R), elected V. Pres. 1988, def. 1992; George W. Bush (R) elected Pres. 2000, re-elected 2004. Cong. Anderson largely escaped some of the scathing by not winning, but the other three caught a fair amount of flak during the campaigns which carried over into office, there increasing solely on this issue, IMO. Am I the only one who finds this suspicious? Liberal? Conservative? Want a real attention getter and 'buzzphrase'? Try Evangelical Christian!

I apologize for typing in "Pres, Jimmy Carteer". That should read 'Pres. Jimmy Carter'.

Two questions re- names I've read, in this thread. Who is Fred Smith; Who is P.J. O'Rourke?

Quoted by JohnV: "However, a more damnable heresy is the liberal idea that God does not love all. "

John, John, JohnV.
I've run across a few by you these last two weeks, and quite frankly, was suprised.
This usage of the term doesn't fit in with my perception of how you normally post and think. Can you tell me what you mean by liberal in this quote? I'm misunderstanding it somehow, I think. -
Gina, it's a response to a previous post that implied that "God loves all" is a damnable heresy promoted by liberals. It is within that context that I was responding.
Hope that helps -

BTW, Scripture says to leave the corners of your fields that the poor may glean...it says nothing of distributing to those who will not glean those corners. It says nothing of providing means for their perpetual need. It says nothing of either trickle down, nor hand up; but simply to remember the poor in your harvests to leave the corners for those who glean.
An example of the success of this is found in the book of Ruth.
Bro. Dallas </font>[/QUOTE]So you claim that the Great Commission means nothing? You refuse to comply with Christ's last command while on earth? -
