The international community has paid over 80 million dollars to these thugs in recent years. It is time to get rid of the problem. Why aren't international fleets there in those waters and taking control of the piracy situation?

As usual, the rest of the world waits for the Americans to be the first to fight.

Now reports are that the pirates have the captain in a lifeboat held hostage.

A lot of interesting things there.....

    1. These ships just recently became US Flagged.

    2. The company was quick to point out these men were unarmed.

    3. Unarmed men somehow managed to recapture a ship, but were unable to prevent the pirates escaping with the Captain.

    4. It just happens to be a US flagged ship, filled with expensive US sailors (a rarity on the high seas) on an aid mission.

If I was a conspiracy theory nut I'd say these pirates were set up. I would also say it sounds like they were stupid enough to take rat poisen designed to allow the US Military to swoop in and do battle on a grand scale.

Someone posted earlier that the world was,as usual, waiting for the US to fight their battles... You better believe it. Only problem is as soon as this nation administers justice via US Navy Seals or USMC, the same nations that were 'back channel' begging for the US to do it will lambast us in international political arenas for doing it.

As a sailing family, we watch these things closely (although we've never circumnavigated, many private vessels sail in those waters).

LadyEagle is correct - the captain and pirates are in a life raft - NOT in the water. A P3 has spotted the liferaft (my brother is crew on a P3) and a Navy ship is on it's way to the area. One pirate is in custody of the crew.

My prayers are with all involved that they can capture the pirates safely and bring them to justice. I'm grateful that so far, no one has been hurt.

Anybody with 2 brain cells to rub together knows these Somali pirates work for al-Queda and other islamic terrorist groups. (Remember Black Hawk Down?) That the powers that be won't acknowledge it and deal with them accordingly is beyond belief. The Somalian piracy has been going on for far too long under this present administration and the last one. :(

Our navy ought to pull up along side, and issue the following order:

Release the Captain unharmed, & y'all surrender OR we have some snipers on board that are needing some real life practice, and IF the Captain is not released UNHARMED immediately, we will start picking you off one by one --- with bullets that have been lubed with swine fat!

You have 30 seconds to comply! 1--2--3--

I still say that if we would use pig fat on our ammo, and let it be well publicized, we could make much better progress in these political boondoggles! ('Course this would not be acceptable to our nanny state dept.)

    Agreed.

Lt. General Maples testified before Senate Intelligence Committee about the links in March:

    http://piratebook.blogspot.com/2009/03/are-somali-pirates-helping-al-qaeda.html

The news media thinks they are (I just heard it) a "rag tag group." And this was FNC whom we would think would investigate the situation further. We know CNN, MSNBC, etc. won't. I think our government knows, but is too politically correct to take the matter under control. Especially since the situation in Somalia was blown under Clinton, when he caved in. They could all learn a thing or three from Thomas Jefferson on how to deal with islamic pirates.

That's pretty good. I have this imaginative vision that President Obama will come to a microphone and speak into a camera the following:

"To the terrorists who have taken an American captain hostage. You are now dead men. If you kill the captain, you all will die within 15 seconds. If you let him go, once he is safe, we will kill you. Or, we might show mercy. Which of these alternatives do you think will give you a chance to live?"

Of course, it is only my imagination. President Obama will never do anything this confrontational.

    I got it!

    How about a test run?

BTW, I kinda' like the idea of using lard covered bullets for sniper practice, as well!

Waiting to hear the spin on the (in)action of our fearless leader that was confident that he could handle that "3:00AM PHONE CALL" as well as the Hill; c'mon you Obamamites, let's hear it for your champion!!!!

Shouldn't take a few SEALS more than 15-20 minutes to solve this problem; IF the potus would act like a potus and give the go-ahead for the military to resolve it! (Ain't holding my breath though!!)

Can we add "gutless" to the description of the "0"?

Why are these crews unarmed? I know that if I were on a ship, I would be armed or I wouldn't go.

According to Lew Rockwell, they are not allowed to be:

There is also this from Larry Howard, chairman of the Global Business and Transportation Department at State University of New York Maritime College in an article:

The Alabama's crew may have been especially prepared for the pirates who tried to take their ship. The ship's second in command is a graduate of the Massachusetts maritime Academy – where the mariner's father teaches a course in how to deal with pirates, notes Howard.

Merchant ships are unarmed, he says, but crews are trained in the use of high-pressure fire hoses and other resources onboard for turning back or subduing pirates.

That's the problem our President is a yellow belly coward who only thinks of doing what is politically correct..

    What a wimp in chief!

This is not a hard decision.. Shoot the cowards. Use the military's might...

For God's sake, start acting like the super power we are!

If the US can't take out four men in a dingy.. then we are in trouble..

    Rub a dub dub.. Obama's a flub!

Because Obama doesn't have a clue what to do. His first choice, as demonstrated, is to do nothing and hope it goes away.

2nd choice is to do choice 1 some more.
