A Thank You on Memorial Day

I want to express my appreciation for those who have given their lives in the defense of the United States of America throughout our nation's history. I also want to express my appreciation for those who have served and suffered serious, lifetime injuries in our defense. And I also want to express my appreciation to our currently serving men and women in our armed forces, such as my great-nephew who has just completed a tour of duty in Iraq.

May God bless them every one.

I can't stand it when people say "Have a happy Memorial Day". Memorial Day is a somber holiday; It is not intended to be "happy". If our brave soldiers hadn't died for our country, there would be no Memorial Day.

Besides two hitches in the Air Force, I worked and retired from a VA Medical Center. I saw the permanent damage done to many of our veterans--to their minds and their bodies--of the ones fortunate enough to return alive, or were they?

In my humble opinion, I would not have wanted to return with a destroyed body, mind or both and spend the rest of my miserable existence locked up in a mental institution talking to myself or to imaginary people, or just lying in bed totally helpless and just waiting to die.

Twisted bodies and twisted minds--destroyed by war so vile that any person is fortunate to come back at all--let alone to come back the same as when they left.

The sights I saw at the VA gave me a profound respect for our veterans who paid a far greater price than I did. I was one of the fortunate ones who came back physically and mentally intact (by the grace of God).
