As Paul Harvey would say: "The rest of the Story"

    From the story
"The last major GE factory making ordinary incandescent light bulbs in the United States is closing"

    (bold is my emphasis)

$30 an hour - not bad -for a product that cost very little to buy

    That's the truth.

So, what are we supposed to do? Use these newfangled energy-saving spirals they claim are better? We have a few of those at our house, and they are worthless. On top of that, we're told we can't toss them in the regular trash when we are done with them.

What a sin and how predictable. China slave labor works for 30 Cents per hour. And Ive always liked Winchester...nice town & pleasant people. God help the USA.

You'll end up having to use the fluorescents. I toss them in the trash and smile as I do it :).

We will be in the dark where it gets colder than 20 degrees outside - those stupid compact fluorescent lights do not work when it is colder than that. So, I am stocking up on as many incandescents as I can afford to buy so that I will still have an outside light during those long, cold winter nights.

We're stockpiling incandescant light bulbs because we hate the light bulbs.

I'm waiting for the LED bulbs to get brighter and come down in price. Those are even better, last a really long time, not as breakable as incandescent or fluorescent, and use even less energy.

Will you support legislation that requires that only LED bulbs are used?

When I read these threads really wonder if some of the "knee-jerk" respondents Actually read the article or link before commenting. Because if they did they would not be making ignorant statements about the tired old conservative vs. liberal thing Again.

These Bulbs are bad/old technology. They are not a good product in light of others options. That said we shouldn't be legislating against their production stateside as we're losing this trade and manufacturing war with China.

There is a bigger story here about GE pulling out and herding overseas. But with labor conditions as bad as they are here, who can blame them?

No. Lights in most peoples homes do not consume that much energy... even if you use the higher power consuming Incandescent Bulbs (which are a direct connect AC Current bulb). Your consumption comes from the appliances. Note that the fluorescent compact bulbs used in homes does save energy but note of caution: 1) cant be used to dim (2) They all contain levels of mercury so Id never use them in baby or child's bedrooms (3)Life expectancy is diminished when you turn them on & off like a regular bulb. If you turn them on it's best to leave them on for 15 minutes.....remember their not consuming that much current & they will last longer that way.

Regarding LED mandates....Just pure BS designed to make you spend your hard earned money.

What frosts my bottom is GE spend big money to pioneer the light bulb then the compact fluorescents. So they take their manufacturing to China & India where they can make maximum profit. Im tired of supporting no increasing taxes to the wealthy when the working class in the USA is being fired in mass so that fat cats like Jeff Imult (sic) & other GE exec's make handsome dividends on antics like this. Let those guys take some hits & if they want to, let them move where there factories are.

Silly, silly, silly man... don't you know that thanks to the CO2 we give out, we are increasing the earth's temperature... and one day thanks to global warming, it won't get colder than 20 degrees...

For proof, look at Florida!... all those northern retirees have moved there, increasing the population, and raising the CO2 level produced by an over population of old humans... NOW, when was the last time you ever seen it below 20 degrees in Florida? See!.. My point is proven!

So there is no need to worry.. we just need to breathe more to speed up Global warming!

No. I'm not into legislating everything I think is good.
I happen to think LED's are cool, because of those benefits I mentioned (I also love the color changing ones used for decoration and display signage, and the richness of color LED's produce; it's an all around good and useful technology), but that has nothing to do with thinking everyone should use them or anything like that. In fact, then, it will lose some of its novelty/uniqueness. (Like is happening with compact fluorescents now).

A bit of information about LEDS:

30,000 is 1250 24 hour days. At my age the bulb will outlive me. After all I do not have the lights on 24 hours a day.

Incandescent light bulbs may be inefficient at producing light but during the dark months when the are on the most they help to heat the room and even out the room temperature.

Florescent bulbs last a long time if you NEVER turn them off. We have a light over the kitchen sink which is never turned off and the bulb has been replaced 3 times in 20 years.

The good thing about florescent bulbs not working when cold is that we will always be able to get appliance bulbs which are tougher, anyway. And I don't think any of the new types will work as an oven light.

I personally love LED's but they are still at the stage of modification & reducing price. Ive got a few friends @ Phillips that are working on perfecting these baby's but have you gone to one of those Retail/Wholesale places like Home Despot & looked at the prices.....wow. Im also a big advocate for fiber optics for light & communications transmission....but @ what cost....tis the question.
