Now I know why the teachers are protesting the budget cuts here in Texas. It is so they can ensure their suprentendant gets a pay raise.

FWIW a good superintendent can make sure millions in federal funding either comes into a district or at least doesn't leave the district. With the way schools are funded a good superintendent could easily be worth a quarter mil to the community. In fact the means of funding schools pretty much insures superintendents salaries will be high. No Child has made it a fairly high stakes game.

Not saying it's good, just not totally unreasonable (given the economics) or unexpected.

Syracuse just appointed a new super, and at 204 G, she will be making more than the mayor.
Enrollment is 20,076. For a full look at Syracuse stats - click here

    Here are her other benefits:
    25 days vacation
60 days paid sick leave and family illness leave (78 days the second year and 96 the third year)
    Eight personal days
Car, or $600 a month automobile allowance
    $300,000 life insurance policy
$5,000 per year for professional development
Full benefits for her and her dependents

Then they'd feed you in casseroles and maybe a few bucks - if you're good.

The guy who was in charge of Dallas ISD (Dr. Michael Hinojosa) here in Texas was making $328,000 not including benefits. He even kept his job after the district "discovered" they were at least $64 million dollars in the red, other figures put it at $84 million. The budget problem caused 750 staff and teachers to lose their jobs... in order to show how much he was "hurting" he took a 5% pay cut for the year which still means he was making over $300k.

Though if you consider getting paid per student I guess the ones you brought up get paid more since DISD has 158,126 students in it.

Goes to show that hard work, time put in, and dedication pays off.

With everything they have to handle, a good super deserves every penny. Do you know how many things they have to know, how many people they have to appease, how much responsibility rests on them for how many people?

Do you know how much work certain parents create for them? I can say I probably kept mine pretty busy with a few issues and I'm just one parent. I can't imagine the entire district. Lawsuits pending, lawsuits threatened, people under you not doing their work but you hold the responsibility for it, negotiations, all the red tape to make sure everything's done right...

I'll probably never be one to complain about a seemingly high salary for anyone working in the public school system after I've seen how much work they carry. I know some school districts are smaller, or easier, or aren't in a big city.

Want to make a REAL difference? Forget how much people get paid. Get rid of the stupid grants that come in and can only get spent in one certain way. Do you know how silly it is to be required to spend thousands on unneeded high tech computers for say, the yearbook committee because someone decided that was their pet project and then have hundreds of students who can't study at home because they don't have math books, they're working off print-outs?

Or they have high tech babies for the kids to take care of while blind students don't have batteries for sound books because of how the money was allotted?

Yeah. A good super deserves what they get paid. But even then, the school is only as good as the effort the parents put into it for their kids. The super is one person. If all the parents got involved in helping the super, think how many people that would be working for the benefit of the students. Wow. Amazing thought.

However, is a quarter million plus a VERY generous retirement proper? My daughter was doing her observation in a local school and the superintendent gets his full pay from this school district - and he's retired from another school district. So he's double dipping making over a half a million a year. In a school district with 2200 students. That's ridiculous IMO.

Honestly, I do believe they deserve to be paid a decent wage but more than double the average income in their school district is a bit much IMO.

Ann put on her resume and application for school superintendent:

"I wanna be a school superintendent!!"

    Somehow, they passed her over.

    Jealous much?!?!

For an organization of that size that sounds about right. Lots of responsibility, lots of pressure. Now I don't know what kind of job she is doing, but hard work has it's reward. Pretty sure that's in the bible somewhere.

I'm sure that the superintendent works hard but does she work harder than the garbage men? Does she work harder than the teacher? Does she work harder than the waitress? Or the nurse? Or the pastor? Does she really work for $250,000 a year plus a HUGE package (retirement and benefits)? Did you read that the neighboring school district has a superintendent that is retired, receiving his pension from another district and is collecting here - thus earning a half million a year? I'm sorry but since I pay over $8,000 taxes a year, and do not have any children in the district and the schools are laying off staff because it doesn't have enough money. Doesn't make sense to me.

    Jealous? Yeah, not so much.

Compare teachers and police officers. Their jobs have become very similar in many ways. In most cases, teachers and police officers start out with good intentions to do the job. After 5 years or so most teachers and police officers wake up to the fact that the job is a dream, not doable under the current social contract. Many modern Americans are neither teachable nor controllable under the US Constitution. I'm told in policing the wake up time is now two years.

This is why teachers and police officers want to become administrators! Administrators are still technically teachers and police officers but can perform a useful function without teaching or policing . . . and the pay is better.

It is funny how jealousy makes one say ridiculous things.

I don't want the garbage man running my school, well any school for that matter. And yes, the superintendent gets paid more then the garbage man, as they should be. It requires more training, more skills, and is more demanding - so they get paid more. That's the way it works.

How much should a superintendent make? How much would you be comfortable with them making?

Would you rather a cap be placed on what people are allowed to make, make it even for everyone else? That would be socialism, which I'm pretty sure you don't want.

I don't care if someone is "double-dipping" retirement and still working, they have put in the time and work so they get the rewards, again, that's the way it works.

Education and hard work have rewards, to the victor go the spoils.

Yes, but when I pay their salary, I have the right to say "I think that is too much." How much do you pay in school taxes where you live?
