In the past year or so, many sources have called for us to pray for the safety and security of religious leaders in middle eastern nations (e.g., Coptic Christians) who are being persecuted for their beliefs---many of which are obviously not biblical.

Is such a practice as this really scriptural?

Think can pray for them to be kept safe/spared from being killed/harmed, but also to have the lord open their herats/minds to the real Gospel and real jesus!

Would tend to see this as praying for those in a natural disaster,as regardless if saved or not, that God would preserve human life and get resources into them!

I'm still not clear on who, or what, is a non-biblical leader, but I do pray for Christians, non-Christians, and pagans alike.

As for Christians, I pray for the persecuted church of all denominations. Christ is our unity, our particulars don't matter here.

I am not God nor do I know who among those who name the name of Christ are truly regenerate and who are "tares".

I will pray God's protection and love over all His own . . and let HIM sort out who is who!!

Also think that the Lord also does watch over and does intervene for "humanitarian" purposes to ahve those who ar not saved to get emergency refielf/protection etc, and that we can ask Him to be gracious and merciful to them also!

Like the Good Samiritans under Franklin graham, can use that to outreach the message also!

Would the Pope be a non-biblical religious leaders?
Should we "pray for the safety and security" of the Pope?

Of course, that should be spiritually intuitive.

Like Dr. Bob said, we don't know the heart and mind of our brethren after the flesh.
    You just never know.

    2 Timothy 2
24 And the servant of the Lord must not strive; but be gentle unto all men, apt to teach, patient,
    25 In meekness instructing those that oppose themselves; if God peradventure will give them repentance to the acknowledging of the truth;
26 And that they may recover themselves out of the snare of the devil, who are taken captive by him at his will.

    Pray for everyone, anyone.

Yes, there are situations which would make that a challenge.

But, the answer is - yes, we are our brother's keeper.

We are all brothers in Adam.

David had no qualms about praying against his enemies. It would make sense to include the leaders of those enemies.

    Psalm 3:7
    Psalm 58:6

I recognize that my post above was not specifically about religious leaders, but I think the prinicples may apply.

think primary prayer for ANY false religious leader would be that the Lord would have mercy on them, and hoping their blinds eyes and hearts to the real jesus and His real Gospel!

Where that really gets interesting is with the 'messianic' psalms.

I'm praying Obama's diplomatic efforts with Iran are successful.

Think the ONLY solution to the problem of iran and their coming nukes is the "Isreali" one!

No, rather like one who holds to the future prophecies yet to be fulfilled by God!
