Pregnant Christian: Death Sentence

Her father was Muslim, but she was raised Christian and married a Christian man.
However, that is considered a violation of the Muslim faith, and she refuses to "return."
The lashes? They say her husband isn't her husband, because he's not Muslim. So she's accused of being with a man outside of marriage.

I apologize for this being a thread discussing the same issues another thread on this forum covers, but that thread failed to mention the key factors in this outrage -- that Meriam Ibrahim is the wife of an American citizen, and that her only crime is the ridiculous allegation that she has "had relations outside of marriage" because Sudan does not recognize a marriage to a Christian. The article in that other thread made it sound like this was strictly an internal affair of North Sudan, but it has international implications, as discussed in the Fox News piece here:

International outrage is mounting over the death sentence a Sudanese judge ordered for the pregnant wife of an American citizen — all because she refuses to renounce her Christian faith.

Meriam Ibrahim, 26, was sentenced Thursday after being convicted of apostasy. The court in Khartoum ruled that Ibrahim must give birth and nurse her baby before being executed, but must receive 100 lashes immediately after having her baby for adultery — for having relations with her Christian husband. Ibrahim, a physician and the daughter of a Christian mother and a Muslim father who abandoned the family as a child, could have spared herself death by hanging simply by renouncing her faith.

"We gave you three days to recant but you insist on not returning to Islam," Judge Abbas Khalifa told Ibrahim, according to AFP. "I sentence you to be hanged to death."

But Ibrahim held firm to her beliefs.

“I was never a Muslim,” she answered. “I was raised a Christian from the start.”

We need to pray, first and foremost, for Dr. Ibrahim -- she's also a physician -- her husband Daniel Wani, and their 18-month-old Martin, but secondly we need to actively make our voices heard with our representatives in Washington.

The most frustrating thing for me is that the biggest reaction our Department of State can muster is being "deeply disturbed." Seems to me, if they are "deeply disturbed," they can dang well do more than put out a press release!

It is always odd to hear when a child is in prison with the mother. In this case, one born, one unborn. One would think that if they generally allow a mother to wean her child before carrying out such a sentence, they would also provide a healthy place for her to care for the child until that time, but it sounds like that is not the case when reading other news stories about her situation.

The audacity of these "religious" leaders is astounding.

Real persecution exists in the world and here we have another example. We are praying for her and her family as a church body.

I simply do not understand how Islam can continue to allow these atrocities with such little protestation from those who claim it is a truly peaceful religion. Astounding to me really is the silence of there clerics and religious leaders of Islam in the US. They should be marching in the streets.

Perhaps it is time for Christians to start.

I don't know - if we start acting like everyone else and marching, protesting treatment and other religious ideals, isn't that just taking it down to their level?
Maybe this is why lifestyle evangelism is so very important. The reason why being a Sunday Christian just doesn't cut it, and why this nation is in such a downward spiral. The majority got comfortable being Sunday Christians, being okay with a quick "I'm praying for you" and making sure they looked okay, where the toughest thing about it all has been overcoming the embarrassment of approaching a stranger, not to even bother opening one's own mouth, but to hand over a tract and walk away.

And here we have a woman, eight months pregnant, facing being hanged, her son imprisoned with her, not ashamed. If this is what she faces now, what has she gone through in her daily life up until this point?
Bet it's nothing like the "obstacles and struggles" we face in the United States.

Dunno about anyone else, but I feel horrid about the general state of affairs of the church in the United States, at least from where I stand. Myself first of all.

When they march, they beat others. When we march we do so non-violently.
When they march, they yell in anger. When we march we do so in dignity.

There is a difference between the way we do things and the way they do things. If we don't march, we linger in silence.

Radica Islam is not going away. They certainly have no fear of social media, twitter hash tag messages. All they understand is a bullet, and we can debate the horrors of war tilll the dogs come home, but this is your future if we do not take action to stop it!

The question was asked about Iraq, which is back under the control of Islam and which is soon to vote on a bill legalising marriage to nine year old girls. The war did nothing to stop the terrors of radical Islam. That was my point.

So do you think the President should send troops to the Sudan to rescue this woman?

The question had nothing to do with Islam barbarism - it is still going on there. Part of the problem is that Islam is designed to thrive and grow under opposition. It is written into its tenets. Their long history shows that they are more than happy to die and killing Muslims leads to their growth as a religion. This isn't as easy as it seems. Radical Muslims are more than happy to let non-Muslims send them to their concept of heaven.

I can't claim to know what the US should do to intervene in this particular tragic Sudanese situation.

I agree - though I don't know what could actually be done since I don't know much about US/Sudan relations. Surely though there is something beyond 'deeply disturbed.' Its a tough situation. Sanctions always seem to hurt the weaker members of society - and here it would certainly be the Christian minority.

As believers our primary goal should be to 'pray for those in bonds as though we were in binds with them.' But certainly something can be done for the wife of a US citizen?

She is the wife of a U.S. citizen, and as such State can enter a formal complaint on Daniel Wani's behalf, making direct intervention and insisting on the release of Dr. Ibrahim to custody of her husband and U.S. authorities for immediate voluntary deportation. The difficult thing is, I'm not even sure Dr. Ibrahim wants that.

Her patients are the poor Sudanese who otherwise are not going to get proper healthcare. She is one of the few western educated doctors in the country, from my understanding. She may not want to leave, and is hoping to undermine the Sudanese judge with world opinion before the case goes to whatever passes for a "supreme court" in North Sudan.

That is why she needs our prayers and our vocal outcry.

I'm not sure who ordered it, but it seems someone asked for DNA on the son. Perhaps that is what the United States is waiting on before stepping in, wanting to cover all their bases before taking action?

I wonder if there have been cases in the past where fraud happened, or if this is merely an attempt to throw the woman's integrity into question and stall things. That's why I wonder exactly who ordered the DNA test and if it will be trustworthy results.

Whatever the case, the mere fact that someone is set to be executed for not being a believer is unacceptable, as is the forced adoption of this couple's child into a Muslim family.
