How exactly are they different? Both used a vulgar drawing to make fun of a religious figure.

If you go to the response there would be an obvious difference, one sued and lost the other went and murdered people but that happened after the fact.

Was the commentator saying the responses were the same? That would be idiotic, if that was the case.

The Hustler piece was a direct personal attack on one person. I believe the Falwell sued for libel and won. The cartoon about Islam is a general satire piece aimed at no one in particular. Falwell was saying, "you cannot portray that about me", the terrorists are saying, "you cannot portray that about a religion." See the difference?
