Idiot on MSNBC says Falwell suing Hustler magazine over unflattering cartoons is equivalent of the Charlie Hebdo massacre. MSNBC host barely challenges this assertion.

How exactly are they different? Both used a vulgar drawing to make fun of a religious figure.

If you go to the response there would be an obvious difference, one sued and lost the other went and murdered people but that happened after the fact.

Was the commentator saying the responses were the same? That would be idiotic, if that was the case.

MSNBC is struggling for relevancy. Another reason why I can't stand the 24 networks...all of them.

The Hustler piece was a direct personal attack on one person. I believe the Falwell sued for libel and won. The cartoon about Islam is a general satire piece aimed at no one in particular. Falwell was saying, "you cannot portray that about me", the terrorists are saying, "you cannot portray that about a religion." See the difference?

Larry Flint is pure libertarian.

A slimeball, to be sure. A most depraved person, exploiting thousands and thousands of young women.

But he is a constitutional expert, and a warrior for it. Falwell did lose that case, I believe you are mistaken, ITL. Doesn't happen often.

Falwell wanted his name in the papers, again.

But the moral equivalency argument is preposterous.

Not often you get to look at a Frenchie-French for a liberty slogan, but in this day of absolute P.C.-absurdity, there sure not many American leaders who sound anything like that.

Bill Maher fired one out today you should read.

Falwell lost, 8-0 in the Supreme Court

Falwell won the libel suit in court and Flynt appealed it all the way to the Supreme Court where they overturned the lower court's decision.

That was a great quote.

Pretty much agree with him (for once) except for the part where "all religions are stupid and we should insult them."

That's the world talking. The general vibe of the piece is correct.

Therefore, Falwell lost. It's not a win if in the end you lose 8-0.

Satire is satire be aimed at a group or an individual.

Falwell lost what happened that lead up to that is irrelevant and not newsworthy. Anything else about it is a fun fact and really....who cares.

People have always done satire. I may not like the satire but nothing and I mean nothing justifies slaughtering people over it.

Sure, but there's still a difference. Here's two hypothetical statements:

"That Baptist Board is made up of a bunch of uptight hypocrites that like to shoot heroin."

"That go2church guy on BB is a drunk and a child beater."

One is a general statement, the other is a personal attack.

Uh, maybe you need to look up the definition of satire, let me help.

the use of irony, sarcasm, ridicule, or the like, in exposing, denouncing, or deriding vice, folly, etc.

Your hypothetical statements fail at satire and only achieve at being attacks. Want a do over?

InTheLight, thats's just Go2church. Not sure what crawled up inside of him to make him so grumpy, but he's been that way for years. Just let him think he's right.

Generally a happy fella. When someone makes bold, assertive claims yet doesn't understand the concept being discussed, correction is needed. In, doesn't seem to understand satire, just trying to help someone out.

Well then from now on we will all stop wait for you to show up so we can all make sure that we understand the concepts being discussed.

How arrogant.

So help me out and explain why a fake ad of Jerry Falwell endorsing liquor and explaining his first sex encounter was with his mother in an outhouse is satire? Or he endorses the liquor because, "I always get sloshed before I go out to the pulpit. You don’t think I could lay down all that BS sober, do you?"
