    This scripture has always perplexed me... How can I be holy?... But yet we see this verse among the other ones in first Peter

    1 Peter 1:13 Wherefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and hope to the end for the grace that is to be brought unto you at the revelation of Jesus Christ;

    1:14 As obedient children, not fashioning yourselves according to the former lusts in your ignorance:

    1:15 But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation;

    1:16 Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy.

    When we think of God... Ergo the three in one Trinitarian Godhead who is Holy... God the Father... God the Son Jesus Christ... And God the Holy Spirit... Again how can we reach that holiness?... Apostle Paul who said in his letter to the Philippian brethren.

    Philippian 2:1 If there be therefore any consolation in Christ, if any comfort of love, if any fellowship of the Spirit, if any bowels and mercies,

    2:2 Fulfil ye my joy, that ye be likeminded, having the same love, being of one accord, of one mind.

    2:3 Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves.

    2:4 Look not every man on his own things, but every man also on the things of others.

    2:5 Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus:

    2:6 Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God:

    2:7 But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men:

    2:8 And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.

    To my understanding of the Holiness of God is to think of others first in conversation and deed before we think of ourselves... Your thoughts?... Brother Glen:)

    My question exactly EWF but then what are you going to do with these verses... Who made you Holy?... Only Jesus Christ can make you Holy!... I remember the writings of an Old English preacher by the name of William Huntington who always signed his correspondence and sermons with William Huntington S.S. or Sinner Saved... He knew was a Sinner but he was Saved one... Brother Glen:)

    1 Peter 2:5 Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ.

    2:6 Wherefore also it is contained in the scripture, Behold, I lay in Sion a chief corner stone, elect, precious: and he that believeth on him shall not be confounded.

    2:7 Unto you therefore which believe he is precious: but unto them which be disobedient, the stone which the builders disallowed, the same is made the head of the corner,

    2:8 And a stone of stumbling, and a rock of offence, even to them which stumble at the word, being disobedient: whereunto also they were appointed.

    2:9 But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light;

    2:10 Which in time past were not a people, but are now the people of God: which had not obtained mercy, but now have obtained mercy.

    I’m not going to do a thing about them. I believe that I’m saved but I still sin and I’m going to sin each and every day. I didn’t ask to be saved you know so if God decided that I’m saved then he must allow me to live my life as I see fit and that includes sinning. Look at David... he was a tremendous sinner but he was also beloved by God.... so I see it the same

    1 John 2:1 My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous:

    Our Father wants this: "that ye sin not'.

    He does however provide an "advocate" or LAWYER for the inevitable - to plead our case (and I have heard that He hasn't lost a case yet).
    IMO This passage is for willing, rebellious sin.

    Also we have 1 John 1:9
    If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

    This is not a license to commit sin but a pardon and cleansing from sin and an opportunity for repentance.

    don't wait too long.

    Hebrews 3
    7 Wherefore as the Holy Ghost saith, To day if ye will hear his voice,
    8 Harden not your hearts, as in the provocation, in the day of temptation in the wilderness:

    Well, that's true but why live that way?

    He has asked us to be holy.

    You can’t be holy in this world where sin is the operating Reality-show.

    Romans 11
    3 Lord, they have killed thy prophets, and digged down thine altars; and I am left alone, and they seek my life.
    4 But what saith the answer of God unto him? I have reserved to myself seven thousand men, who have not bowed the knee to the image of Baal.

    I think the difference is that we are not called to be holy like God is holy but because He is holy. We are people who stumble, but if our lives are marked by Christ we are holy because of the One to Whom we are called.

    Amen Jon and we have a way of maintenance when we fail or even crash and burn:

    1 John 1:9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

    1 Corinthians 11:31 For if we would judge ourselves, we should not be judged.

    Let us seek righteousness not sin and we will be blessed.

    Matthew 6:33 But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.

    Yes, and remember that I did not ask to be called & I would have much preferred a life of sin. Sin is fun & in this sinful world sin can be very rewarding.And just what is sin, its nothing more than reality. I could have exacted punishment to my worldly enemies, gotten rich by villainy etc. So now, I am still a born scoundrel who is to do what because I am saved....Right, forego reality, become a do-gooder, be an idealistic fool? Angels themselves denounce fools for that kind of thing.

    But even before I turn into a major looser, let me say that I have been raised to try my damndist to be a good & gentlemanly person, thanks to my mother who always had her trials & never got a brake. God showed me all that & that painful memory with stay with me forever---it was never sponged from my memory. I used to prefer that life....but now I know better. The Lion will lay down with the lamb, but not until the rest engorge themselves to being bloated.

    Words.....define sin, define righteousness. Are we a Christian country or a Non Religious Republic? Are we victims or masters?

    Good that is what I now believe. we are our own destiny. If we are victims at all, or conquerors, we have done it in our minds and our will, or with our faulty judgements or our illusions. If we permit others to exploit us, in private life or in government, we chose it.

    I'm already feeling much better thank you.....more alive, stronger, empowered. Knowledge is a great thing....true knowledge that is, not the trash fed to people which is merely propaganda to the stupid masses. Once understood then the world is acceptable, even fun to play in & the rewards are myriad....not so for the obscure. Think about it.
