THe correct answer is: any occurance of evil
1 Thessalonians 5:22 (HCSB):
Stay away from every form of evil.
1 Thessalonians 5:22 (KJV1769 with Strong's #):
1Th 5:22 Abstain567 from575 all3956
appearance1491 of evil.4190
G1491
εἶδος
eidos
i'-dos
From G1492; a view, that is, form (literally or
figuratively): - appearance, fashion, shape, sight.
note, not "looks like" -
I couldn't answer because the correct answer was conspicuous by its absence.
3. None of the above and I know what it means.
It means, roughly, every time evil appears, abstain from it (refuse to participate). -

"every form of evil" rings through for me. Marshall- Greek-English Interlinear RSV NT
Fashion, shape, sight : also. W.E. Vine. Expository Dictionary of Bible Words.
Appearance is inadequate A.V. as its vague and does not convey " every kind of evil.
Keep ya nose clean
Probably a verse that could be used wrongly by a Christian.

TCassidy: "It means, roughly, every time evil appears, abstain from it (refuse to participate)."
Amen, Brother TCassidy! What you said means the
same thing as the given
answer: 2. any occurance of evil
You explained the whole verse; i was just trying
to concentrate on "appearance of evil".
MOst of the preachers i've known and most the posts on
this board would lead one to believe all you need to
avoid is what LOOKS on the surface as being evil.
Unfortunately this approach leads folks to try to
do evil THAT LOOKS GOOD :-( -
'Appearance' in 1611 when the KJV was originaly
translated meant what 'occurance' means
in 2005. 'Appearance' as used in the
KJV1769 major revision of the KJV -- 'appearnce' still meant what 'occurance' means in 2005.
We should shun evil no matter how it
looks on the outside. We surely shouldn't
take evil in to raise :-(

The problem is that the KJV's "appearance" can mean BOTH "occurence" and outward perception. The error most of the time, especially in fundamentalist circles, is to opt for the second meaning, which is unsupported in the Greek.
This is why I prefer modern versions in many areas--they are often more clear as to what EXACTLY are they trying to say, whereas the KJV over time has become vague, due to the evolution of the English language. -
Amen, Brother StefanM -- Preach it!

I concur with the above opinions. However, I've found that things or actions that APPEAR evil ARE almost always evil. And I'm NOT talking about peoples' clothes, hairstyles, bling, etc.

The problem is that words change as time passes, its ok if a person understands the change, like the bible enthusiast, like Ed and the rest of us who look deeper into passages but for non-christians thinking about God and Christ it is vital that what they read is not misleading or obscured by the age of the text. Thats why I give the thumbs up to Bruce M Metzger when he says...
"That message must not be disguised in phrases that are no longer clear, or hidden under words that have changed or lost their meaning; it must be presented in language that is direct and plain and meaningful to people today".

We will start a thread on "words with radically different meaning" between the common 1600 understanding and the common 2000 understanding.
Of course, some will say that in the OED the "old" meaning is still there. And of course it is, because it is in the KJV and words there must be defined! But this does not mean that the average Joe on the street today will not read and understand the word to mean something RADICALLY different! -

From Barnes;
1Th 5:22
Verse 22. Abstain from all appearance of evil. Not only from evil itself, but from that which seems to be wrong. There are many things which are known to be wrong. They are positively forbidden by the laws of heaven, and the world concurs in the sentiment that they are wicked. But there are also many things about which there may be some reasonable doubt. It is not quite easy to determine in the case what is right or wrong. The subject has not been fully examined, or the question of its morality may be so difficult to settle, that the mind may be nearly or quite balanced in regard to it There are many things which, in themselves, may not appear to us to be positively wrong, but winch are so considered by large and respectable portions of the community; and for us to do them would be regarded as inconsistent and improper. There are many things, also, in respect to which there is great variety of sentiment among mankind--where one portion would regard them as proper, and another as improper. There are things, also, where, whatever may be our motive, we may be certain that our conduct will be regarded as improper. A great variety of subjects, such as those pertaining to dress, amusements, the opera, the ball-room, games of chance and hazard, and various practices in the transaction of business, come under this general class; which, though on the supposition that they cannot be proved to be in themselves positively wrong or forbidden, have much the "appearance" of evil, and will be so interpreted by others. The safe and proper rule is to lean always to the side of virtue. In these instances, it may be certain that there will be no sin committed by abstaining; there may be by indulgence. No command of God, or of propriety, will be violated if we decline complying with these customs; but, on the other hand, we may wound the cause of religion by yielding to what possibly is a mere temptation. No one ever does injury or wrong by abstaining from the pleasures of the ball-room, the theatre, or a glass of wine; who can indulge in them, without, in the view of large and respectable portions of the community, doing that which has the "appearance" at least "of evil ?"
{a} "abstain" Isa 33:15
This is the correct view.

People who come to Christianity from the street Bob, know Jack!
These are the people Christ died for. We must preach the gospel in the same vernacular as Paul preached to his hearers, 'the language of the people and of the day' [attack on the Word of God snipped]
Someone stand by me please!

A lot more people might live if they hear the gospel clearly.
I feel your slap brother, but I think its worth it.
The KJV1611 and others have bore thier fruit and still do to a certain extent.
God bless you.
