Did anyone see either of these programs?
I watched most of the History channel program and the beginning of the A&E biography of Jim Jones and also the last part.
A&E focused on the fact Jim Jones carried a Bible (KJV) everywhere he went as a teen; the History Channel focused on the 'human friendship' of Jesus and Judas which led to Judas' betrayal and ultimate suicide as being possibly caused by his dedication to his master as any true disciple would be.
The betrayal was also seen as been required of Judas by Jesus his master, (the disciple never does anything the master has not commanded).
By logical reasoning would this mean that only truly dedicated disciples would follow Judas' ultimate sacrifice?
This was also speculated on as a possible form of 'self-atonement' of Judas for his act against his best friend.
My point is that in the first (A&E Jim Jones is portrayed as a fundamentalist tying him to holiness type groups in his teens) while the History channel once again failed to mention the diety of Christ but continually focused on the humanity.
If you watched these programs, did any flags go up for you during either of them.
I have seen the show on Judas before; IMO, it's a modern version of the old Cainite doctrine; Gnostics appropriated Judas for their own purposes.
Irenaeus of Lyons, Against Heresies
Tertullian, Against All Heresies
I like the History Channel, but some of the religious programming can get pretty squirrelly. Then again, I was flipping past TBN last night and saw some preacher saying that Caiphas knew Jesus was the Messiah and deliberately had Him condemned because he knew Jesus had to die for the redemption of men.
