Well I'm gonna give my 2 cents...I sing but can't follow a live piano. Why you may ask?? It's because I don't read music that well. I take my cue to sing from the track. I don't get the fake tracks either only the artists original. Usually the fake one are poor quality and usually sound nothing like the original and are hard to follow. So not everyone wants or can use live pianist. (The only exception would be if the original piece of music was just piano.)

I dont find tracks to be dishonest at all.
-
Think of the reports of pastors plagiarizing other men's sermons. I know, some might argue that these taped backgrounds are being offered with the intent of being used in performance, but still- would you respect a pastor who went to buyasermon.here and "legitimately" bought and paid for a sermon to deliver?
I would submit that the impact of the electronic age (modern lighting and climate control aside) has not generally enhanced the true worship and exaltation of God, but made it more complicated by encouraging laziness and shortcuts. -
I cant see how using a track would be dishonest unless I were to record it and sell it. I could make my own track, using more "technology" (keyboard, computer techno.) and may end up doing so. We have keyboard talent in our church, but our instrumentalists can only play one style - SOuthern Gospel shaped notes. But man, can they boogie with it!
When I lead or direct anything musical, I have to do it as "professionally" as possible. I will only give my very best, 100% for my Lord. Why settle for mediocrity when ya dont have to? If I didnt strive for that, I'd not be being true to what God has called me to be. -
I prefer live music. Jokingly, my live musicians prefer it canned.

moeowo2,
I know what you mean, I really do, but still...
The thought that there is "fake" and "non-fake" artificial accompanyment tracks!

I don't think anyone in Tater's little church thinks they have an orchestra.... and since Tater plays the piano, she can't very well play for herself and act in the Passion Play at the same time.
-
We are far from an orchestra, but we do have a flute, a clarinet, a tamborine a coupla guitars, and a set of bongo drums from Africa. We could really get down!! (but the blue hairs'd freak out!)

I have used my keyboard/workstation to create certain tracks for various songs I could not find the music for. I have a full orchestra inside that keyboard and everyone knows it.
-
I LOVE those things!!!

TaterTot, why don't you have someone record it while you play it, then use the tape during your cantata.
It would be nice if your church had a digital piano. Then you could just play and record it on the piano to be played back later. Our pianist does that if she isn't going to be at church and someone needs music for something special. All we have to do is push a button to play it. -
I would totally LOVE a digital piano a Disklavier to be exact. I think I found the tape, though. Wont know til it arrives - didnt include composer's name, so I am just taking the chance. If its not, I'll make a recording of it. It'll just sounds "canned" because I dont have access to professional recording stuff. Ours at church is broken.

Agin, folks- I think the point is that if you don't have the orchestra, you don't live out the fantasy that you do by bringing it in on tape. If you don't have Spurgeon in the pulpit, you don't bring in videos of him. You work with what God gave you.
It boils down to your perspective on music and how you apply that perspective, I suppose- Is the playing of instruments a means of expression of praise and worship toward God (I would argue yes), or a performance to enhance those who are, or just a "show" for some "holified" entertainment? Subtle distinctions, but important questions to ask, nonetheless.
