What would be the names of some good pre-Reformation Baptist theologians or Baptist commentators?

Since Baptists were not around before the Reformation, it is impossible to find any (despite the JJJ theory).

The apostle Paul comes to mind. James, Peter, John the Revelator...
Oh, and there was this Jesus guy..... -
Jesus wasn't Baptist, he was Jewish. Just ask his mama ;)
Oh, what a thought, the Saviour of the World had a Jewish mother. I better stop now before the stereotypes start... -

Jesus walked from Nazareth to Beth-abara (about 45 miles) to be identified with John the Baptist (Jewish also, probably a Nazarite Luke 1:15)
But I digress....
My point is we Baptists take our heritage from the New Testament, their doctrines are ours. So it makes sense to me to call them the first Baptist writers, commentators, etc.... -

According to the Bible John's baptism was for the remission of sins. In Mark 1:4, the Bible says," John did baptize in the wilderness, and preach the baptism for the remission of repentance for the remission of sins."
My baptist friends have told me that they do not baptize for the remission of sins. Are they right or wrong?
If they are correct, your previous statement about your doctrine being from the New Testament is in correct, according to Mark 1:4, Acts 2:38 and a host of other passages. -
No doubt you could give me a long list of names that come after the reformation. Why not before then?
Ron -
Justn Martyr
Irenaeus
Hippolytus
Tertullian
Cyprian
Cyril of Jerusalem
Ambrose
Jerome
Basil of Caeserea
Augustine
Chrysostom
Just to name a few.
Of course they didnt call themselves Baptist but dont forget we didnt pick that name. It was tagged on us by those who didnt like the fact that we were re-baptizing those who came to Christ from Protestant and Roman churches. (ana-baptist- re-baptizers). You read too much RC revisionist history.
Matt 22:29 Jesus answered and said unto them, Ye do err, not knowing the scriptures, nor the power of God. -
Perhaps I didn't pose my original question very well.
I am looking for a name of a commentator that fairly well presented the Baptist distinctions prior to the reformation.
Calvin seems to be the earliest that I can find.
The list the Psalm provided is problematic because, while one or two of them may have said something that sounds like it may support one of the Baptist distinctives, in no way could they be described as "baptistic" in their beliefs.
It just seems to me that in that period of over a thousand years, baptistic believers would have written something summarizing Baptist type beliefs. That assumes of course that such believers did in fact exist.
Who would Calvin have drawn from?

When the Catholics (and the Roman army) finally destroyed the Donatists, the Muslims swept through and the church disappeared from North Africa for over 1000 years. Having destroyed a true church, the false church was unable to stand.

I normally wear a 3 inch Benedictine crucifix on the outside and in view, and when I encountered one of them, known prominantly here in town, he was unable to speak!
You figure.....
Seriously, I think it intimidates others, who know that I will defend my faith when challenged!
It also keeps me honest! The tendency to use profanity is greatly reduced when I wear it!

Why do you think that the person was speechless?
Also, how would a three inch Benedictine crucifix be able to keep you honest and reduce you from using profanity?
Seriously, I've never heard of this before now.

Secondly, I said the "profanity" thing more in jest and to reveal that I am a Christian still subject to sin, thus having it around me helps, knowing how much of a scandal it would be if I did "sware." Actually, I would not sware if I did not ware it, but I could do so in my heart, and knowing that I have the crucifix on me helps.

Christus Vincit! Christus Regnat! Christus Imperat!</font>[/QUOTE]And what would your definition of a "serious Christian" be, if I may ask?
Also, do you feel that this crucifix has more power than the Spirit of God to keep one from sinning?

But the Crucifix constantly reminds me of Him, the second person of the Trinity, and who is God, just like the cross reminds you on the steeple of your church (which I presume you have).
As for keeping from sinning, I pray a lot. I also receive Him in His body and blood in the Eucharist daily, or as often as I can.
It is that simple...
