RICHMOND, Va. - Barack Obama picked up the endorsement Tuesday of Grammy-winning bluegrass music legend Ralph Stanley.

' And if Obama lacked mountain credibility, he got some help from bluegrass legend Ralph Stanley, who took the stage about an hour before Obama's arrival to show his support for the Democrat.
"The reason I'm here is to do whatever I can to help Senator Obama be the next president of the United States," Stanley said, drawing boisterous applause. "I believe that Senator Obama would be the best man to get this country back in shape." '

But you said it and that was a very sophomoric thing to do. I am suprised.

But you said it and that was a very sophomoric thing to do. It is much like the Obama Waffle folk saying, we were just trying to be funny.
I am suprised.

Anyone who would let a musician tell them who to vote for deserves what they get. No matter what kind of music they play.
But as a banjo player, and a fair one at that, that was purdy funny.

Do you know "The Wreck of the Old 97?"
Always liked that piece of music. Also like "Ash Grove," a lot. Lots of good banjo music to listen to.

I just got done recording an old song, on the banjo, called "Gutney Weeds".
I did the banjo, bass, guitar, & mandolin parts on it, and Phyllis is working on her dobro part, right now.
The banjo is a fine instrument, and playing one does not decrease yer IQ, or make you lose teeth. It will, however, keep the people you don't particularly care for, far enough away......

I respect Banjo players... basically because I can't do it!
I am not talented enough!
And I am slowly.. v e r y
s l o w l y.... beginning to like bluegrass.. the more I am around the player, the more I like the music...
I grew up being forced to listen to the Stanley Bro... (they were one of my dad's favorites)
I wonder why he chose Obama.. what stood out?

Usually the wealthy and corporations are not the heroes in bluegrass music songs where they are mentioned.
A segment of bluegrass music is about coal mining which is heavily unionized.
Bluegrass music speaks well of the blue collar working man and family farmers - not the wealthy and corporations.

True, but wouldn't Obama's stance on the environment be against the coal mining industry?
Obama is so much NOT the bluegrass type...
He is big city, while bluegrass is rural.
His values do not line up with the average coal mining family.
But then again, neither does McCain's.

Obama keeps saying he wants to develop clean coal technology.
I think he also owns a pair of old coveralls...

See, right there is what I am talking about... Obama in overalls.. who can imagine that... or even in jeans and a flannel shirt with gloves splitting wood....
He does not fit the image.
That's why your statement is funny.
He is not down to earth.. but is part of the elite.
Why a bluegrass fan would like him is baffling me.

Who is Ralph Stanley?
Does he have any records out?
Is Ralph Stanley an actual person, or the name of a group like Jethro Tull or Pink Floyd?
Do alot of people look to him/them for political advise?

1) A bluegrass music legend along with Bill Monroe, the Father of Bluegrass Music, and Jimmy Martin, the King of Bluegrass Music.
2) Lots.
He has been recording for decades.
3) Yes.
I saw him in person at the "Down From The Mountain" tour.
4) I have no idea who might look to him for political advice.
