As Matt said, there's no way possible that this is the entire story. I can't make a judgment call either way without more facts.

This may not be the entire story, but I do tend to believe the mom -

This is often what happens - we see punishments go to the extremes - for a minor or even possibly no violation.

My goodness, the child is only nine years old.

I wish they'd given more facts.

A nine year old student is perfectly capable of sexual harassment. It's not completely unheard of for kids even younger to come from families where the kids watch pornographic movies with dad (because dad think it's cute and wants to make his son a MAN!) or the kids see those types of magazines.

Of course there are things that are just kinda funny or innocent coming from someone that young, but don't dismiss the possibility of it not being quite so "cute."

Age doesn't matter and so many start out young, either repeating abuse or repeating something they've watched or seen. Some are just plain predators. Most of the time there is vast reluctance to give any consequences to the kid because of age, even when they do things overtly knowing they are wrong, because "they're just kids." Then those kids grow up and end up in jail, sitting their in shock because they thought nobody would ever do anything.

I see far too many kids who are well on the path to becoming predators. Even one is too many. I hear too many parents whose hands are tied because either the police won't press charges because of age or they want to blame the parents or they just won't believe the kid did such a thing. One I know of to press charges against a adopted child found themselves investigated by DHS and were told they must give up custody of their birth kids, calling it a failure on the parents part to protect the kids from the abuser, but nobody would help them with the kid because she (yes, she) was young and just needed extra help and therapy, in their opinion. The adopted child ended up raping a few kids and now works with kids, since her record is perfectly clean since it all happened when she was under eighteen.

It's simply shocking what truly goes on in a lot of homes and what is now considered "normal" by agencies. It used to be called harassment or rape, now it's being called "normal exploration," even when it happens between relatives, the age range is quite different, and the victim says no.

Because nobody wants to think someone, say 9 years old, is capable of such things.

Very true! His age is not the real factor here for his innocence. Good post

The Huffington Post has a story and video on this.

In the video the boy says "I told a friend I thought my teacher was cute, that's all I said".

He was talking to a friend, not his teacher.

He was overheard by an evesdropping substitute who reported him to the authorities.
She does not dispute that is all he did or said.

Better close the school on Valentine's Day.

And we still only have one side of the story. Kids have a habit of minimizing what was said when they get in trouble. Half truths are given. I'm not saying that's the case here, but it certainly is possible. Maybe the kid was overhead saying "That teacher is [profane word of your choice] cute." Maybe he described actions he would like to take with her? All I'm saying is that we may not have the whole story.

For it to be sexual harassment it would have to have been a direct statement from the boy to the teacher, not secondary evesdropped hearsay of a statement to a friend.

In my high school sex education class, we learned about sexual harassment. There are two types of sexual harassment: quid pro quo sexual harassment, in which a person is pressured to perform sexual favors for a benefit, and hostile environment sexual harassment, which creates a hostile environment through unwanted sexual comments, jokes, or suggestions.

We also learned other informative things, for example, we had a segment of the class entitled "Birth Control for Married Couples". Our teacher said that we can use that information when we get married if we want to control when or if we have children.

[SIZE=+0][SIZE=+0]If that is what happened then the type of discipline was improper although the substitute teacher did the right thing in reporting it. The statement was still inappropriate for a 9 year old towards his teacher and his parents should be setting him down and dealing with him about looking at her and thinking of her in that way. The child also needs to be removed from that class and perhaps even that school. It would be different if he was seeing a 9 year old girl as being cute, but not his teacher. His mind set is already out of control and he needs to be dealt with through counseling now before it is too late. The big problem here is not the teacher or even the school. The big problem is the parents who do not see the problem here and try and excuse it by saying he did not speak to her directly or touch her. This child is already on a dangerous path and his parents are pushing him along the way. I just pray that the Lord gets ahold of him before it is too late.

Nonsense.

If anything it's the fault of the godless public school system that denies prayer, the reading of the Bible, denies God through the teaching of evolution and teaches our grammar school children to be perverts through "sex education" and books like Heather Has Two Mommies.

His real crime was probably that it was a heterosexual statement.

You know nonsense like this makes me glad we homeschool.

To a 9 year old the word "cute" is synomous with "pretty". Is it sexual harassment to tell someone they are pretty?? If so, we have an awfully skewed view of sex.

It is not sexual harassment. This is an overreaction from a zero tolerance teacher who doesn't want to have to use personal judgment just as many teachers don't. The most that should have happened is that the teacher should have told the boy that the comment was inappropriate and then moved on.

"A story garnering a lot of attention around the country today is the two-day suspension of 9-year-old North Carolina student for sexually harassing a teacher by allegedly calling her “fine” in a suggestive tone."

"According to WSOC-TV in Charlotte, mother Chiquita Lockett says a letter from the school states that her son has a history of using inappropriate language. The letter contends that the boy had been warned about racial slurs and other derogatory words to describe his classmates."

As I said before...more to the story. We still don't have the full story and we likely never will.

Uh, from the same link:

“After a thorough investigation by school officials involving the suspension of a fourth grade student at one of our elementary schools, it has been determined there was no sexual harassment. We regret this situation happened. The superintendent has attempted to contact the family to offer an apology to the parents and student. The school system is also sending an official letter of apology to the parents and student. The suspension will not count against the student and additional instructional assistance will be provided to the student for the classroom time missed. If a concern is reported by parents to the district office, our procedure is to investigate it and follow up with the parents.”
