That's true. And sometimes that influence is deserved because of the man's wisdom and spirituality. If I were the pastor, I'd try to find the most spiritual, wisest man inthe church and seek his counsel. But if a man came to me first, I'd wonder if he had an agenda. I'd keep an eye on him until I was certain of his motives.

We were always taught as a pastor to be friendly to all, but familiar with none. When I went to a new church, I always sought out a reliable deacon with whom I could confide. It made for a wonderful relationship in the church so long as that friendship was not obvious to all.
I think this is why we have ministerial associations...a tension release club.
The other mechanism I had was going to the church at 2 in the morning, pulling out all the stops on the organ and playing away for an hour. Although I did make the mistake one morning on not checking the pa system. It was on and I forgot that it went directly into an old gal's house who loved church, but couldn't attend in person owing to a disability. Good job I only played hymns! Her only complaint was that I hit a few bad notes.
