This is a Coffee House announcement

Here is an update on the progression of house building for a one "Blackbird"

Plumbing--------75% complete
Sheetrock----hung and mudded in
Painting---beginning stages
Cabinet work---75% complete
Flooring-----2 1/2" oak planking throughout with exceptions in kitchen(ceramic tile) and wash/laundry(ceramic tile)-----yet to be started
Installation of wood burning heater/fireplace-----75% complete

"Move in" date----goal set at April 2, 2009

Remember Jim1999 tells how he lives on the back of a 100 acre piece of property------well---I'm not far from the same---we live on the back of an 80 acre piece of farm land----the driveway is 1/4 mile from the highway!!!!!

We are getting ready to take down the lathe and plaster ceiling in the sitting room....

To-day is a holiday in Canada; Family Day. I am taking the day off. Actually I dislike holidays. It means I can't even go to village for coffee. I could be a cranky poster to-day....:saint:

Are you telling us, Mr. Blackbird, that you never really finish a job you start? All those undone percentages.

Sheila, we don't use lath and plaster anymore in Canada. That is what sheetrock is for. That lath and plaster is a real pain to remove. Our village house is over 100 years old and that is what it had....all gone now......thankfully.

Jim, our house was built in 1934. I think this is the last ceiling to be replaced. I know it will be a messy job. We will be doing it ourselves as we can't afford to have it done professionally, although we may get someonein to do the skimming when the new ceiling is up.

Sheila, If you make a T frame with one inch lumber it is easier to hold the huge, heavy 8x4 sheets up to ceiling whilst they are being screwed into place.

Taping is not difficult so long as you don't rush it and be patient to put about three thin coats over tape, spread beyond the tape by three or even four inches. Most people rush the taping and don't allow each layer to set properly.

We do plastering and drywall here. We just went through a lot of that work ourselves. How tedious! Our house is only partially finished, but it's our home. I'd rather live here than in the city!

The sun is shining today, but it's still cold. I'm anxiously awaiting the birth of my kids (yes, baby goats). It's making me nervous. I hope I'm a good goat midwife. LOL!

Later today there will be creamy potato soup on the stove. Be sure to stop by!

Its just like this right here--------we started on the plumbing-----"roughed" it in to all the pressure points and then roughed in the drains and junk like that-----carrying it underneath the house to a central location on the west end---and then we had to stop with that until we get the Ceptic tank and sewer fill lines installed and dug

See??

We didn't need a licensed plumber to do the "roughing" in------but the county health dept requires a licened plumber to install ceptic and fill lines

Good morning all on this rainy day! I got up at 6:00 AM and had breakfast, but then I went back to bed and just woke up again at 9:30 AM. It is raining here in North Carolina,and will be overcast all day. A good time to just relax and rest.

Now I am a legal resident of NC. Yesterday I got my drivers license and registration changed over from NY to NC. Last Friday Lenke was laughing at me and said, "I don't believe it!" Here in NC you need to retake the vision & written test to get a license, so after 55+ years of driving I did just that. Now I did not know that you have plenty of time to do the test on the computer, so I was kind of rushing it, not wanting to run out of time. Then again I was thrown off by "tricky" questions, so I failed 6 out of 25 questions. You can miss 5 to pass....

I give you a forexample of the questions which I missed. 1) When two vehicles arrive to an intersection, which has the right away to proceed? The multiple choice answers were: A) The vehicle arriving first. B) The vehicle on the right. C) The Pedestrian. Now, since in the question was no mention of the pedestrian, I chose "A" and failed because the computer answer was "C." 2) What is the speed limit in North Carolina? The multiple choice answers were: A) On the Interstate 70 MPH. B) Outside city limits 55 MPH. C) 25 MPH or as posted. Now the book states that the NC speed limit is 35 MPH or as posted, so I chose "A" because the book agrees with it, although "B" was equaly good. Would you believe it that the computer gave 25 MPH as the right answer? There were questions like these that threw me off. Back North we did not have such a tricky and illogical quesion/answer tests. But yesterday, when I went back, I was prepared and took my time, and have seen through the trickery of the questions. I passed with flying colors!

Although, when I came home, I told Lenke that I failed again. She was smiling and said, "Not you! It is impossible." and she just smiled from ear to ear. Well, now I have to bring the car to get it inspected and after that go to renew our passports, as they expired the end of last month. We are so busy still with all these details in order to tranfer all our data to NC.

Brother Barnabas, glad to see that you are up and "driving" again. Now up here, once one reaches 80, he must retest as well. Three tests: written, visual and driving. Then it is every two years we must do either the driving or written test.

I went for my driving test. Started the car, put on seat belt, turned the turn signal on and then asked where we were driving to. He told me to turn the key off and come indooors to office. I said, "Hey, I have to drive home you know?" I figured he had failed me straight off. He said, "You did all the right things for a fellow your age. They will give you your licence indoors." Relief...

I only drive around our small village,,one main street...Mary does all the driving away from home.

We are gettng some milder days now, but I expect we will see more snow before March ends. Last year, on March 28th, we had a snowstorm with four feet of snow!

It's silly that they give trick questions. You should have told them to check again, that you gave trick answers and they were really correct. The exact same thing happened to me out here. I was NOT happy. I sat looking at the computer with my mouth hanging open. ME? Fail a test? YEAH RIGHT! If it was math, yes, anything else, nothing short of an A is good enough!

Congrats on getting your license! It sounds like you guys get a lot of rain out there.

And thanks for the precious news. Can you tell me exactly where you read this? I've been waiting a very long time and when I turned on the television today, Obama's face came on and I turned it off and thought to myself "this would be an excellent time."
Perhaps we should tell others this good news. :flower:

Hey all! What a dreary day here. It started out just overcast but while I was at the barn, it started flurrying, then raining, then pouring rain, then pouring sleet - and it kept changing every 5 minutes! Fortunately both horses got ridden by DD and I and all was ready for everyone to be brought in.

Now I'm freezing and waiting for my DD to post the videos we took on Youtube. The whimp is laying on the couch under a blanket. LOL Maybe I should toss over some ice cubes??

I left for you guys some cheese and crackers - including my new favorite cheese - a cranberry Wensleydale (I think that's what it's called). I think that's my dinner tonight - an entire chunk!!

Wow, Bro. Jim, you mean to tell me I have to look forward to be retsted in 10 years again, when I reach 80? Oh well, now I know the trickery of the NC DMV question system, so I do not fear. On the other hand, Lenke dreads taking the computer test, so she is studying the book from cover to cover.... :laugh:

Today is Annachristine's birthday. She got her Leapfrog Globe and absolutely adores it! It really is neat. You touch the pen on it and can play different games. It had you point to countries, or you can touch a place and it will tell you the name and play the national anthem or a popular music style from there. Other games tell you facts about the place. It's such a neat thing!
