Everyone has been great answering questions for me. I thought I'd give this one a try:
I Cor. 11:3-16. The reasons Paul gives for women covering their hair:
v. 5 Women dishonor their head when they pray uncovered
v. 6 It is a disgrace to have hair uncovered , just as her head were shaved
v. 10 - two reasons (1) appears would offend angels who were present at worship and (2) women should have a sign of authority over their head
Three of the four reasons don't appear to have anything to do with customs at the time (arguably it is not disgraceful for a woman to have her head shaved any longer, although most women would feel ashamed).
Why should I not be covering my head when I go to public worship?
Covering Head

This is an old question but a goodie Newgrrl.
I cover my head because it is a custom at my church. I do not feel strongly about it and am ambivalent about some of the rationale, however, it is a very good church and I want to attend it so I abide by the rules. My church is not wild about women and girls wearing pants either so I wear a skirt or dress. My workplace requires I wear pants as a part of my occupational requirements so I oblige. -
NewGrrl, If you do a search for headcoverings, you'll find dozens of VERY heated debates on this subject.
We do have a few members who cover. -
Diane: I tried searching head cover and headcoverings and I was only brought to this post. I tried searching in both the Baptist Only sections as well as the general discussions. Could you post a link to the other discussions?
Thanks! -
Check the archives. The passwords there are 2003 for 2003, 2004 for 2004, etc. I've got to head out to church. It's our AWANA Grand Prix Race Day. I'm the Cubbie Director.

Diane, since you're so giving today, how about giving me the password to the womens private forum. I want to research some real life babbling.
-
Gib, you would be disappointed.
-
I don't see how to research the archives. Can someone explain...? Thanks!

A headcovering was the norm for the Catholic Church until about 1965 until they announced that women no longer were required to wear a head covering.
If a Christian lady wants to look like a Muslim that is her business but she would probably communicate a wrong testimony to those on the street. -
gb, the headcoverings I've seen on Christian ladies are much different than I've seen on Muslim ladies.
Much smaller. -
Ah Gib... we no longer give out a password for the women's forum. I have to enable each person permanently. You're not a 'girlie man' so you can't come in!

Our search isn't working like it used to and I'm not sure why. Checking with Webmaster...

One of our headcovering ladies sent me a headcovering about 2 years ago. It was black lace and looked like an oval doiley. I showed it to Gib.

Just toss the word headcovering into google to see what traditional Christian headcoverings look like.
my church is into headcovering.
Click on the link to see what I use in church to the dismay of the elders.

Mioque! LOVE it! LOLOL
The southern black ladies wear hats much like those shown in the wedding photos of Camilla. I've tried some on for fun at a dress store here in town. -
I'm getting more modest, the previous one was bright red and spiky.

All,
bmerr here. I believe the Scripture reference is 1 Cor 11:3-16. Something to notice is Paul's statement in verse 3,
"But I would have you know that the head of every man is Christ; and the head of the woman is the man; and the head of Christ is God."
The issue here is that of authority. In the Corinthian culture, a woman covered her head to show that she was under the authority of her husband. The context of these verses is one of a women-only assembly, as Paul mentions women praying or prophesying, which are prohibited in the general assembly (1 Cor 13:34; 1 Tim 2:12).
In their culture, for a woman to be shorn meant that she was a prostitute. For a Christian woman to be uncovered would send the wrong message to be sure!
To show that the issue of head coverings was cultural, we need only to understand that Eve had no veil. This matter was not based on creation.
Also, in 1 Sam 1:13, we notice that as Hannah prayed silently, Eli "marked her mouth", which would have been impossible had she been veiled.
Women today should not be required to wear a covering on their head, unless it is of cultural necessity to keep from evil being spoken of her.
In Christ,
bmerr
