Former CBSNEWS anchorman Walter Cronkite believes Bush adviser Karl Rove is possibly behind the new Bin Laden tape.

Cronkite made the startling comments late Friday during an interview on CNN.

Somewhat smiling, Cronkite said he is “inclined to think that Karl Rove, the political manager at the White House, who is a very clever man, he probably set up bin Laden to this thing.”

Interviewer Larry King did not ask Cronkite to elaborate on the provocative election eve observation.

People with no accountability such as the news media say some very stupid things. If I hadn't seen Cronkite's name attached to this, I would have attributed it to some of the people who post here. It is a wonder that Cronkite ever got any respect at all.

Surely he said it "tongue in cheek".

Maybe Cronkite should have an interview with Saddam and ask his opinion of Bush for "4 more years".

Perhaps Uncle Walter is speaking from experience. Perhaps when he was the influential #1 rated anchor he had a liberal agenda which he hid under a guise of objectivity. Perhaps he is living proof that "it takes one to know one." Or perhaps he's just getting old.

The Drudge Report is not exactly reliable or without its own agenda. Any link to a first-hand report?

I expect that Hardsheller is correct on this.

I found a transcript (subject to change according to the page), and that is what Cronkite said: link to CNN transcript

Without facial expressions, etc. I really can't tell for sure, but I still think (or at least hope) that Hardsheller was correct in his assessment.

Cronkite would do better to keep his mouth shut and just let people think him a fool than to open it and provide proof.

Compared to Dan Blather, Cronkite is STILL looked upon as a voice of reason as spokesman for the Democratic National Party (CBS branch).

I hear Cronkite hangs out with the "hillbillies" at Bohemian grove.
