I'm a voracious reader & like to read in many different translations, including many different ones in Spanish. I am curious as to what some of the other's here prefer & why. I use the KJV as my main translation. My other faves are Ferrar Fenton's Bible in Modern English. The OT texts are GREAT!!! Especially the Psalms. In the Psalms if you read them out loud they actually have a cadence to them. I'm a music teacher so to me that caught my attention right away. Also his book of Genesis is great. I also like the Worrell New Testament. He uses the word IMMERSE in place of baptism. Makes a difference!!! Phillipps translation I just recently got into & of course the Amplified. I also have the usual slew of NKJ, NIV, NASB etc. But those are sort of "run of the mill". I like it when there is an actual difference in some of the wording. Not a loss in translation just a different way of saying something. I haven't yet bought an ESV though I've heard a lot of good things about it. Can anyone else recommend any nice translation's other than the usual?

I usually use the "standard" versions (ESV, NIV, NASB, NKJV), but when I want something different I read the Revised English Bible (revision of the New English Bible). Unlike many recent versions which try to use the simplest language possible, the REB leans toward a more formal, literary style. This works especially well in the poetic books. Something else which is very different is The Message, but this paraphrase is not among my personal favorites.

Up until recently I would have said that the NIV was my favorite bible. However, this changed a few weeks ago. I was very sick and thought I was dying. I had been away from the Lord for sometime and I knew that he was getting my attention. I have somewhat of a phobia about going to hospitals and did not want to go. Eventually, however, the pain was such that I could not stand it any longer. The fear was that if I went to the hospital, I would never come home again. God does have a way of getting our attention.
I finally called my wife at work and told her to come home. After she arrived, I told her to call the ambulance. While I was waiting for the ambulance to arrive, I told my wife to get my bible to take to the hospital with me. She asked which one I wanted. Thinking that this might be the last bible I would use, I told her to bring my Old Scofield Reference Bible, which is a KJV. For some reason I was adamant that she bring my KJV. I did not have any confidence in any of my other translations and only wanted a KJV bible.
This may sound unbelievable to some people here at the Baptist Board, but it is completely true. Since this incident I do not have any confidence in any bible except the KJV. I do not classify myself as KJVO, I am more of a KJV preferred. My family and I are now looking for a church that uses the KJV exclusively; we are not looking for a church that makes this the focus of every topic but one that simply uses the KJV and is happy to do so.
Let me clarify that this is not the only thing we are looking for in a church. We want to attend an IFB church that is more fundamental that the one which we are now members of. -
ESV is my primary reading and study Bible. I always keep the NASB very close and the NIV somewhere near me in study, too. But I utilize a lot of translations. One of the most helpful, yet overlooked, is Phillips Translation of the NT.

CJV (Complete Jewish Version) is my favorite Bible for reading. It is DE (dynamic equivalent) which is mot my favorite.
Weaned and preached out of a Scofield KJV1769. Now use a large print NKJV. Don't care for the Greek text as much, but like the FE (formal equivalence) in translation.
And the best notes in a study version? NIV Study Bible without a doubt. -
ESV, NIV and NLT .

I should have said the Holman Christian Standard Bible also . I read through the NT ,the complete Bible will be out next year .I seem to go to it alot .

I use my keyword study Bible mostly. It is NASB. However, my favorite tool is e-sword and I do a number of parallel studies....
I really don't have a favorite translation though. I have found that when I study, it is best to compare 2 or 3 translations to get a solid understanding of what is being said. -
My two favorites are the NKJV and the ESV, but I also refer to the NASB a lot when studying.
My favorite study Bible is the New Geneva/Reformation Study Bible, a fact which gives away my theological bent. -
I use the KJV, NKJV, NIV, ASV, RSV, Young's, Message, Amplified.
I use Nelson's Electronic Bible Reference Library, Basic Edition. Also use (and LOVE) e-sword.
My MacArthur's Study Bible (NKJV) is wore out (even though it is in a cover). I enjoy my Hebrew-Greek Study Bible (KJV), but it now called the Keyword Bible. I have a parallel Bible with KJV, Amplified, NASV, and NIV side by side that I find very useful.
By examining God's word from many angles, and through different lenses, I feel that I am better able to grasp it firmly in my heart.
In Christ,

Well, God's word is found in the ESV thinline.
I believe this based on the promise of God in Psalm 12:6-7 to perfectly preserve his word in the English language of the year 2001.
If I didn't have the God's word (ESV), I would choose God's word, the NASB.
The King James did a good job translating inadequate manuscripts.
Basically, it goes something like this:
ESV
NASB
NKJV
MKJV
LITV
KJV -
I've GOT to get me an ESV!!! As for the KJV I actually PREFER the Textus Receptus so therefore like the KJV, NKJV, & Youngs. I also DO like the Phillips that was the most recent one I"ve obtained. Found it for under $10!!! Anyone here tried the Fenton or the Worrell? Just curious. ALthough I'm NOT Reformed (don't agree with TULIP AT ALL) I am planning on getting a New Geneva/REformation Study bible just to compare. I heard on another forum of someone having a copy of a bible translation that has in the OLD TESTAMENT God's Words in RED. Anyone heard of this one?! That one perked my interest. Thanks for all the input guys (or gals) I really do appreciate it.

If it was good enough for Jesus, it's good enough for me!!

I pray for you, little children, that you would keep yourself from false bibles and stick with God's perserved perfect Word, the ESV Thinline.
And to answer someone else's question:
order of Bible and "b"ible use:
1)God's perserved word: (ESV Thinline)
2)Greek Text: (UBS 4)
3)NKJV (up two slots after aquiring MacArthur's and the Reformation Study Bible)
4)NASB
5)NIV
6)NLT
7)NRSV
8)KJV
