Bush said repeatedly that Muslim Americans are also Americans. I guess he didn't say it in quite the right way? Didn't furrow his brow just right?
The Dems believe in doing something alright; Investigations of their political opponents, declaring a war lost, and in effect saying that the commander is a liar. Good platform!
Powell & his ilk are on their way out, and good riddance. The future of the GOP lies in folks like Bobby Jhindal & Sarah Palin. The GOP will not resemble it'self in five years.
Well, they won't win elections by becoming democrats, if that's what Powell is saying.
And while Obama won the election, if you look at the local results without bias, you will see a country not yet ready to go fully liberal. It looks like it's the exact opposite, that democrats win elections by becoming conservative.......and liberal proposals go down in flames.
Not being a Republican, I wouldn't know for sure.
But I suspect that RINOs step over the line when they start urging their fellow party members to become de facto democrats.
Best post on this thread, you are right on canadyjy.
The only hope for the future of the Republican party is if they separate from liberals like Powell and McCain and get back to their conservative roots. Without Palin McCain would have never competed in this election. You can't out liberal the liberals! While the liberals and the media will applaud when the Republicans nominate someone left wing like Bush or McCain when it comes time to vote they are going to vote Democrat. Isolate the true conservatives and keep them at home not caring and what are you left with?
I have known Colin Powell since we first met when he was at McPherson in the late 80s. He has never been a conservative. He showed he could play the political system when he skipped his division command and went straight to 3 stars and a corps. His republican ties go back to the Nixon administration. He did not play by the rules, kissed up to several Republican administrations and benefited from affirmative action. Because Regan and Casper Wineberger wanted more Blacks in higher command they bumped Powell over several more qualified officers and gave him the V corps command. Powell was willing to sell his political ideology and become a Republican, even if in name only. Then he further benefited in Bush I and II.
The truth is that following normal progression of rank Colin Powell never earned his third or forth stars. He was not the most qualified officer to serve on the joint chiefs and was only put in that position because he was black. He was the youngest officer to ever serve as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs. He was the first ROTC officer to serve in that position, and the only Black American to serve in that position. All that would have been fine if he were an exceptional leader but his Army fitness reports indicate that he was not and in fact his division commander when he was a 1 star said he was a poor leader and should not be promoted.
I would not follow him across a parking lot.
Why does everyone love this guy?
I guess the dems love him because he is liberal as they are and the reps love him because he proves they include blacks.
And everyone else is afraid to say the truth about him because they will be called racist.
Interesting how quickly the GOP turned on Powell, when he is speaking truth that could help them regain power. However, they would rather eat their own. Big tent? Nope, that is just lip service.
Well, some us believe that there are bigger principles in life than simply aquiring power. We don't want to compromise our principles.
Powell is wrong, anyway. The way for the GOP to succeed is to articulate conservative principles....smaller federal government (in size and influence), balanced budget, lower taxes for everyone, strong national defense, gun owner rights, opposition to abortion and same s*x marriage and so on.
Republicans have been taking the advice of liberals to be more liberal....while liberals are pretending to be more conservative. Republicans have been losing with this strategy.
I'm not surprised liberals want Republicans to continue down the same road.
