Dear ones,
One of the moderators has asked me to not post in the forums of debate on this site any longer, as I am not a Baptist any more. I guess spending the first 27 years of my life as a Baptist doesn't count for much...Anyhoo, here was my response to him. It's been fun debating things with all of you, and I hope that each and every one of comes to a place in our lives where we can get past petty differences (denominational and otherwise) and truly get to the business of winning people for Christ...
My response:
"I will discontinue posting on your site all together, then. The only threads that are remotely important to me are the ones in which open and honest debate can take place, and those are the ones in which I post.
I am not a trouble maker, I don't put others down, and it should be fairly obvious to you that I am truly here to learn/debate important topics.
This is yet another reason why I left the Baptist church. There is no room for anything else. It's not about relationship, it's about rules and strctily defending and adhering to YOUR interpretaion of the Bible. That's not what Christ called any of us to do, and it's certainly not what we should be about.
I've enjoyed my time here, so...Vaya con dios!!=)"
Good bye =(

Not trying to be harsh, but this is the "Baptist Board" and you had to agree with the terms when you signed up.
-
See ya later dude.
Although, I am surprised that you weren't deemed to be "baptistic" considering all those years you were a Baptist.

Half of the Baptist Board is for "ALL CHRISTIANS" and certainly look forward to debating and discussing topics there with you if you so opt.

A wise man (my boss at the time) gave me some excellent advice about a year ago.
He said: With our clients, you are the guest. I believed him and put it into practice and it has kept me safe and made us successful. It works in other areas also, not just work. It's difficult but it works.
He was recently promoted.

Denominational issues are not "petty differences." Denominations exist for a reason. Those reasons are substantive. But as was pointed out, this is a Baptist board and you knew the deal with you came here. As well, there is about half the board for non-Baptists to post on and I am sure you are welcome there.
Your assessment of being Baptist is very misguided. There are some Baptists who are very legalistic, but most of us are Baptist by conviction. That means that we believe that the NT church is a baptist church, not in name since denominational names came much later. It is certainly baptistic in practice.
We have to remember that doctrine means something. There can be no unity without unity in the truth. -
Dear cc,
Several have made good points.
Bottom line for me: I am a Christian by the new birth and a Baptist by conviction.
The defining elements of which are embodied in the Baptist Distinctives.
These distinctives are not the only issue but a starting place for me in the choice of a local Church for my family and I to attend. It is good to be able to communicate with other "Baptist" Christians without the issues of the distinctives being debated.
Please understand.
Your brother in Christ.

With sorrow of course, we'll agree to part company in peace. Most of us (though not all) can make a greater impact for Christ outside the influence of the internet anyway - may God bless us all in that endevour.

To Whom It May Concern and other interested parties on the Baptist Board,
I joined this forum back in February hoping to be challenged by discussing God's Word with other believers and sharing what they have discovered about His Word and how it applies to life. I have always enjoyed good debating opportunities - iron sharpens iron.

Dear MalkyEL,
Personally I have been greatly enriched by the BB and the lively debates.
For the most part (IMO) the moderators are fair.
But we are all different (the understatement of the year?) and of varying temperaments and sensitivity.
Your post was gracious and your frustration noted (by myself anyway).
On the other hand, imagine if you will the frustration of having the thankless job of moderator.
Why not stick around?

I'm so glad that God doesn't demand a particular denomination for salvation and enterance to the Kingdom and furthurmore separations of doctrinal stands in heaven.
Colorado, although the terms are set and we all agreed to them, we who are all Children of God should be accepting in all areas. I'm sorry to hear your leaving but I completely understand your reasoning. -
Being a Baptist is not about rules or adhering to YOUR interepration of the Bible. That should be clear from our clear disagreements about soteriology, eschatology and other things.
It is about an attitude, an adherence to the historic distinctives of Baptist life. That's all. -
Shouldn't it be simply about living out what God tells us to live and not Baptipical history, rules or standards?
-
I'm kinda stumped. Does the word "baptist" refer to one's beliefs, or one's denominational affiliation? Can one not be a member of a non-Baptist denomination and still be a baptist by belief? Would that not qualify that person to post in a Baptist only forum?
-
John,
I am looking into the details, but I know that the requirement is that one must be an active member of a Baptist Church in order to post in the Baptist Only Forums.

Is there another document that states things clearer that I may have missed? -
But, what makes our beliefs Baptist? Is it that we practice these? If we recognize these as legitimate Biblical standards of faith and life, then ought we to readily identify ourselves as what these principles through practice make us? Then if so, why not make this true by identification through service of a local Baptist church? therefore, there is no need to pretend that a non-denominational church 'holding' to Baptist principles is Baptist, if it were so, the Baptist name would not be left off the identification of the particular body of believers, the name Baptist would be a testimony to the world that this body preaches, teaches and lives of its Baptist principles.
