To me there are several self evident differences that make the Ayers/Liddy comparison invalid.
First, Liddy went to jail and paid the price for his crime, Ayers did not.
Second, McCain has never lied about or tried to hide his relationship with Liddy, Obama has.
Just like Watergate, the biggest problem with the Ayers affair is the coverup.
Not that what Ayers did was not a big deal, but what brought Nixon down was not what Liddy did, but that Nixon lied about it and tried to cover it up.
Obama has tried to downplay and cover up his relationship with Ayers all along.
Why not just be honest?
You have provided a cogent, well thought out response.
In short you hit the nail squarely on the head.
Unfortunately, our liberal friends will ignore the facts and the points you have raised and attempt to make much hay over this non-issue in order to divert attention from BHO.:tonofbricks:
Well, the comparison is between someone who was convicted for a felony and went to prison and someone who never was charged with a crime.
Do you believe in the American system of justice or as a radical are you trying to substitute something else?
Ayers admitted to the bombings. He wlet off with a technicality. He says he is guilty.
Gordon Liddy illegally taped somebody, got charged, & served time. The liberal Carter commuted his sentence. Gordon Liddy paid for his crime. Ayers would be in jail for life if he paid for his.
And how in the heck is Liddy a radical ? Because he believes governments shouldn't fire into buildings with children in them ?
Hold on there BB. Only one was convicted, but both have admitted their guilt, and only one committed an act of violence.
In his own book (Fugitive Days) Ayers admits that he actively participated in the 1970 bombing of the New York City Police headquarters, the 1971 bombing of the capital building and the 1972 bombing of the pentagon. In 1969 he placed a bomb on a statue in Chicago erected in memory of policemen killed in the line of duty. When his book was published in 2001 (on Sep 10, before the WTC attack) he told the New York Times:
Now it was probably just incredibly bad timing for Ayers that his interview was published on Sep 11, 2001, but he still said it.
Now compare that to Liddy who broke into an office building and planted an illegal wire tap. Liddy served 5 1/2 years in prison. How much time did Ayers serve? Oh yea, none.
And don't forget there is a difference in their involvement with the candidates as well. Liddy has hosted fund raisers and given his own money to the McCain campaign. But McCain's political career did not start in Liddy's home and Liddy did not write McCain's memoirs for him.
You still think these two relationships are equal Crabtown?
This may be the political forum BB but we are allowed to tell the truth here. And since we are already on the net we also tend to look stuff up so you really can't lie and get away with it either.
At the democratic debates before he cinched the nomination Obama stated that Ayers was, "This is a guy who lives in my neighborhood. . . . He’s not somebody who I exchange ideas from on a regular basis."
Then later University of Illinois records showed that Obama and Ayers sat on the same boards, attended multiple board meetings together and even had a joint press conference.
We then found out that Obama and Ayers worked together through the Chicago School Reform Collaborative.
Then we learned that the initial meeting to launch Obama's first election as to the State Senate was held in Ayers' living room.
We learned that Obama and Ayers were both on the board of the Woods fund for 3 years, a time span that included Ayers' interview where he said he wished he had "done more."
We learned that Obama and Ayers were both friends of Rashid Khalidi.
And of course Obama has still not admitted that Ayers was the real author of both Dreams from my Father and the Audacity of Hope. Despite grammatical and literary evidence that matches both of these work with numerous Ayers writings and shows they could not have been written by the same author as other verified Obama works.
Obama lied BB. He got caught but he lied and he continues to lie about it. Do you need more?
Some threads amaze me.
Look at the posts.
We are comparing the virtures of a convicted felon to those of an admitted terrorist.
Is this the lesser of two evils mindset?
Sort of the same thinking that leads to a vote for McCain or Obama?
Here is somemore thoughts on Liddy before we cnclude he's just a "harmless wire tapper".
I don't know if I'd use the word harmless to describe this character. But as I stated, I don't think this says anything about McCain. I am sure there are many good things Liddy has done which are the parts that McCain calls his old friend.
