Right, and even the 1611 had the sidenotes that included varient readings... but the unscrupulous publishers decided to do away with these sidenotes that were there to show the reader that what is in the KJV had other possibilities... Now we have a dumbing down of Christiandom, and when we want to add those notes back as the MVs have done, we confuse people...
It is not the MVs fault, it is the laziness of Christians that is causing the confusion... Study to show thyself approved...
Here's a hint on how to handle varient readings...
Your pastor is reading.. you notice a Little number in the middle of your paragraph... you look to the bottom, and low and behold, it is there... along with an explanation of why it is there...
Make a note of this... go back to listening to your pastor, and when you get home, study the text...
Find out who wrote it, when it was written, to who was it written, What type of literature is it (narrative, letters, poetry, prophecy, etc)... Read the context... research the original reader's culture to find out what it meant to the original readers... run a search on all verses that relate to this verse... And when you get done, apply this text to your life...
If there is a verse missing, find out why... the NET bible has a lot of info on varient readings...
And like Hope of Glory has said, when you get down to the brass facts, the KJV has usually added these verses in... And the MVs are being truthful to the originals... The older copiess are more reliable than the newer copies...
IOWs if there are 10 copies of a text from 33 ad to 1000 ad without a verse, then 50 copies of texts from 1000 ad to 1611 ad with the verse.. the verse was not part of the original...
Did you ever play the gossip game... the closer to the original the more accurate it is...
As said earlier, if it is too confusing, get a copy of the version your pastor reads from... If you don't trust your pastor to read from a good version, don't go to that church... duh... If I couldn't trust the pastor, I wouldn't go to that church...
I have a sneaking suspicion we are being tricked into a versions battle.. does anyone else feel this way?
Have MV's caused more confusion than good?

BTW, it didn't just include variant readings, it also included passages that the translators couldn't agree upon, and some of these passages were doctrinal issues based upon what the translator believed and not on the words themselves.
Such as with the virgins' lamps that were "going" out.
edited to add: It's not the 1611, if I remember correctly in the files. It's a later edit with the original notes. -

But the discussion has been good for the most part. This correlates with the rest of what is happening in society. I need it quick, I need to understand it fully fast. If I don't understand it completely, that's ok because I can be an expert with limited knowledge. I want an A for doing little and learning less . . . School's out - I'm reflecting - AND I want to fix this! I want people to return to the joy of learning for learnings sake. I certainly want people to return to the joy of learning and studying Scripture for what it tells them of our God and our Savior and how it may change their lives. -

"Can I count?"
"I don't know, can you?"
"May I count?"
"Yes, you may." -

Neither are not true.. .He is saying both are true....
"Is it not true?" is the same as "It is true?"
Come on... surely you can see this...Can't you see this?

John 5:31 NASB
If I alone testify about Myself, My testimony is not true.
HOG brought up this QUESTION, " what is the problem with one verse saying, "If I testify about myself, my testimony is true" and the other verse saying, "If I testify about myself, is it not true?" I see the contradiction between HOG and the NASB. -
