Not an Osteen fan (name it claim it), but there is a lot that goes into consideration that some have neglected to mention. Having volunteers there, what is the conditions of getting to the church (is it surrounded), are they already helping church members but reserving their resources just for them because of limited supplies.
Just a lot of factors to consider (and those are just off the top of my head, I am sure brighter people here could add to the list). I will reserve judgement until the church has time to reply. -
I am no Osteen fan. I honestly think if his Daddy were still alive he would drag him out of the pulpit and throw him in the street. Having said that, the article was worthless. I am sure quite a few churches in the area are not open. The article just seems to be a hit job on Osteen.

I lost all respect for Osteen after he prayed over the inauguration of that
lesbian Mayor Annise Parker. Osteen is another one of these feel good
types who think that when you feel good over something like this, and
if everyone feels good over the same thing, then it must be ok with God.
After all isn't God all about love, compassion, feeling good, accepting
others regardless of their openly living in sin? The only way any Christian
will be invited to a sinners ball, is to simply not stand up for the Word of
God and never say anything to make people uncomfortable. then they'll
call you "blessed". -
So, you are saying Osteen would be a good Methodist.

The key with this issue is this: Do they have the facilities to cook and feed thousands of people? The place could be the biggest arena in the world but if they don't have kitchen facilities too cook for that number of people, they would not be approved to shelter people. I also saw a number of pictures of the inside of the facility and they sustained quite a bit of water damage in their basement and first floor - which would likely compromise systems in the building (electric, sewer, plumbing, ventilation) and again, that would cause it to be a poor choice for a shelter. I have been trained by the Red Cross to run a shelter from the selection of the location to the contracts and the upkeep. From what I could see, we would turn down this facility and seek another location to house those who are displaced.

Okay. A little reality. As much as I abhor Osteen's cotton candy brand of Christianity, he has been unfairly attacked for something beyond his control.
Let's look at the facts. Yes, when contacted, the representatives of the church directed people to the government shelters. Not because they didn't want the people in their church, but because the people couldn't get to their church. The streets in front of the building were under 3 of 4 feet of water!
And all the lower levels were flooded up to several feet deep, including the parking structure.
As soon as the water began to recede and it was possible to get to the church building safely, and the interior cleanup was started, people were accepted into the building for shelter and food.
