Oh, and in the name of beating a dead horse...
One Texas trustee's husband/pastor told his congregation (and the potentially hundreds of people listening to the service live on the radio) specifically to "Pray for this week's IMB trustee meeting...they have some difficult decisions to make."
The "caucus" group that Wade has repeatedly referred to had already discussed and decided prior to the meeting that they were going to bring a motion to ask the convention to remove him.
Meeting in caucuses outside of the full board to discuss IMB business is against IMB's own rules. Planning specific motions and actions outside of the presence of the full board is against IMB's own rules. Starting a blog to opine about decisions made in public plenary sessions is not against the IMB's own rules.
But look which one is being blackballed.
IMB Trustee Meeting

And one last thing since I know I need to get a life...
Suppose you're an interested, committed Southern Baptist who will be attending the meeting in Greensboro this year as a messenger, and suppose you would like to discuss the matter with individual trustees so you can make an informed vote...
Too bad. IMB staff have been instructed that all information will be dissiminated directly from chairman Tom Hatley. If you would like the names and conact information for the trustees that YOU APPOINED...you can't have it. You can have a list of names and home states.
So either:
The majority of the trustees do not care to hear from their constituents, the very people who appointed them.
OR
Certain trustees do not want other trustees hearing from their constituents, their bosses, and the people who appointed them.
It seems as though Wade is the only one who believes that the people who actually ARE the SBC have a right to know what's going on or the right to give their input. -
Well the messengers should have the last say period. Regardless of how this whole mess was brought to pass. It has been brought up. Therefore the messengers should have a full access to the entire mess.
I gotta laugh. because this sounds just like a deacon board that wants to vote the pastor out without telling the church. Which happened to me BTW one time.
This is another reason why the convention system is flawed.
I've heard Dr. Rankin speak several times. He is a Godly man IMHO. Regardless of what I think about all this. He definitly has a burning passion for missions. It comes across plainly when he speaks. -

* SBC President EX Officio member, IMB
E Eligible for re-election
I Ineligible for re-election -
I don't have any problem with the positions the IMB took on baptism and tongues. The problem I have is that they took the positions at all.
Seems to me that this is a matter for the entire convention to consider. Otherwise, we have the IMB with one set of policies on those two questions, the North American Mission Board with another, etc. Where it can, the SBC ought to speak with one voice through a vote of its messengers. The IMB's heart is in the right place, but this time its brain wasn't functioning too well.
Tom Butler -
Listen to Dr. Burleson's message Sunday as he addresses the issues at hand. Very powerful:

click on "sermons" on the left, and then click on "Principles and Integrity"
Sorry if this is a repost -
I listed to his message. He is a good communicator, seems passionate and sincere.
It will be interesting to see if this issue will make it to the convention for a vote. And if it does, what the vote will be. -
Here's a little quote those of you interested in this controversy might find interesting:
"I think it highly undesirable that persons previously immersed by Pedobaptists or Campbellites should be received as they stand into the Baptist Church. I think they ought to be baptized when received, for the sake of good order, and to prevent any troublesome questions from afterwards arising. I think that the candidate, even if satisfied with his previous immersion as a baptism, ought to be willing to be baptized now, to satisfy the church and give no trouble hereafter, and that if he is not willing the church can do without him."
Who said that? The real J.R. Graves? A.C. Dayton? J.M. Pendleton? B.H. Carroll? T.T. Eaton? H. Boyce Taylor? Some unknown diehard Landmarker?
Actually - John A. Broadus - The quote is from page 18 of the booklet "Kentucky Baptists, the Seminary, and Alien Immersion" published in 1908 by W.J. McGlothlin. -
Yes, but it is a Local Church Matter! It is not to be decided by a Mission Board!

I guess you can look at it two ways - I dont know the stats, but I have heard that TX is the largest contributor to the cooperative program, and thus should have more trustees. The other way to look at it is the trustees should be divided up equally among the states.
In my opinion, the churches that are most heavily represented are being rewarded for backing the conservative resurgence. 1st Baptist Dallas and Birchman in Ft Worth being especially rewarded for years of service. Miles Seaborn who was at Birchman was really behind the push to get rid of Dilday and then Hemphill. Of course Paige was at 1st Dallas and now Mac Brunson - whose wife is a trustee.
Speaking of women missionaries - of course the two that come to mind are Annie Armstrong and Lottie Moon - to whom our biggest offerings are dedicated! -
Pastor SBC -
Unless Dr Burleson resigns - which it doesnt look like his plan at this point, or the trustees do an about face (dont see that happening either) doesnt the matter have to go to the convention for a vote?
Who knows, the powers that be in the SBC may rule the IMB trustees out of order in their attempt to get rid of Dr Burleson, and make them take him back. I'm sure that this would be a great embarrassement to them - but it sure looks like thier grounds for trying to dump him were weak.
At the convention a 2/3 vote will be needed to throw him off - which I think will be very difficult to achieve.
I think that this entire incident is very significant. It shows that unlike in 79 when everything could be tightly controlled, the advent of the internet, discussion boards such as this one and the blogosphere give common everyday folks like us a window into what is happening.
In the old days, Dr Burleson would have been described a heretic, and all but those that knew him closely would have agreed, the vote at the SBC would not have been questioned. Now, people are seeing how the power brokers try to operate to accomplish thier goals, Dr Burleson shed light on the issue and the old guard is looking pretty bad. -
Interesting in all of this- for you conspiracy theorists- is the fact that Burleson is reformed in his theology, and he is pastoring a "leading" (thriving, growing, mission minded, convention minded, etc.) SBC church in Oklahoma (see below). Just a thought to ponder.
John Blanchard in the USA
John Blanchard returned recently to England after a busy and productive preaching tour in the United States. The tour was triggered by his book Does God believe in Atheists? and almost all of his engagements were related in one way or another to this theme.
The trip began in Albuquerque, New Mexico, where he preached at three Sunday services in Sandia Baptist Church and also held fruitful meetings in the University of New Mexico. ‘The interaction with modern American college students was fascinating and stretching’, he told Evangelical Times, ‘and I sensed more than ever before the stupendous struggle Christian students have when living, studying and witnessing in an utterly materialistic and hedonistic environment’.
From New Mexico, he flew to Illinois for three days of evangelistic preaching in Reformed Bible Church, Springfield, pastored by Dr Curt Daniel. In preparation for this visit, the church had distributed 65,000 copies of John Blanchard’s evangelistic booklet Ultimate Questions, but even this enterprise resulted in very few visitors attending the meetings.
This was keenly disappointing to the church, a solidly Reformed fellowship with a real heart for the gospel. The pastor has a part-time involvement in Good Books, which seeks to distribute sound Christian literature, and something like 200 different booklets, pamphlets and leaflets, as well as audiotapes of all the services, are offered free of charge.
Springfield is the seat of the state’s government, and there are those who feel that this is partly responsible for a marked apathy in the community to spiritual issues.
John Blanchard’s next stop was in Enid, Oklahoma, whose 50,000 population includes thousands associated with Vance Air Force Base. His engagements were at Emmanuel Baptist Church, where Pastor Wade Burleson, a long-time friend of his, is doing a remarkable work. Although the church belongs to the Southern Baptist Convention, Pastor Burleson has maintained an uncompromisingly Reformed stance in every part of his ministry and — to the surprise of many within the Convention! — has seen very encouraging growth.
On his first day there, John Blanchard preached to 800 at the 8.30 am Sunday service, 900 at 10.30 am and another 900 in the evening, when the preaching was followed by a penetrating Question and Answer session relating to atheism and agnosticism.
For the following two days there were early morning and informal evening meetings, all including Question and Answer sessions. One morning engagement was in a one-time bar adjacent to the church and re-named The Grace Place!
John Blanchard was warned that the men coming to the 7 am session would be ‘as sharp as a tack’ and able to interact on a great variety of biblical and theological issues. ‘The pastor warned me that these men, who included air force personnel, farmers and industrial and office workers, had left a previous, well-known convention speaker “speechless” with their grasp of the issues tackled, and I am not surprised. It was exhilarating to interact with them, and to know that there was such a body of men within one church fellowship’.
The other remarkable thing about the visit to Enid was that following the ministry, the church asked John Blanchard’s publishers to supply hundreds of copies of his books, which had been requested by members. -

Here is an interesting question: what would be the IMB's stance on a missionary who received immersions administered in a modernist "Baptist" church; for example an immersion from an Alliance of Baptists congregation?
It seems to me that the modernist heresy ought to warrant at least as much censure as the Campbellite, Freewill or Charismatic heresies.
I also wonder about their position on missionaries who practice open communion. Open communion is without question in opposition to the BF&M.
Mark Osgatharp -
I know a methodist pastor who baptizes people in his congregation who come to Christ in a local Southern Baptist Church. -
For example, most Baptists in this country do not acknowledge Mormon immersion because they consider Mormonism a cult. If the Alliance of Baptists do not constitute a cult, the word has no meaning.
Mark Osgatharp -
so Mark - are you saying that Baptism is required for salvation?
