The gift possessors at Pentecost were also not all Apostles. But they had genuine gifts. Please name anyone in modern times who is not an Apostle but a possessor of a sign gift of any kind. What have you observed?
I'm sorry. I should have said you're right and won the argument. To make that fact clearer. I will give my testimony still. The thing is yes, there are no people gifted with miraculous gifts that work even a few times in their lives after Nicaea, it seems. The miracles and revelations are instead once in a lifetime events. Typically for the salvation of someone.
So then in what sense are you a continuationist? Just in the sense that miracles still happen today?
Yes, and that God could distribute the gifts again except for apostle. At the very least we await one or two witnesses depending on your reading of scripture, since John the Baptist is argued by some to be one.
Oh okay. So, technically, I would suggest may not want to call yourself a continuationist. I also believe miracles still happen, and I believe God could gift someone today of he chose to, but, if this happened, it would be easily recognized, just like at Pentecost. They would be true miracles worthy of God's name.
My guess is, we'll see this during the tribulation period.
I am thankful you guys set me straight. I will debate what to call myself since I do believe prophecy was at work after the apostles but before Nicaea. This and the fact I believe some modern miracles are revelatory and that the gifts could come again sets me apart from cessationists. My testimony itself would unnerve both continuationist and cessationists so I'll get to writing it up and posting it.
I want to say I am sorry for acting like a teacher. I am only a disciple learning the scriptures and I must admit what I am, someone who wants to teach and needs mentorship and further study to do so in a local church. I should approach message boards and Facebook groups with more humility.
Nah, you're a pleasure to talk to. Not an easy subject. Nuanced terms used in different ways by different people.
Below is a video from the Strange Fire conference advocating cessationism (a bit long, but worth the watch). What you might find interesting is that he makes the case historically. I don't think most cessationists believe that God could not bring back gifts at some time in the future.

You're right. I have thought the same thing that I am tossed by every wind of doctrine. I thought it was for lack of bible study, but more bible study on my own didn't help. I think it has to do with the context of the verse you allude to. I was disconnected form a church. I have finally just settled into a church where I have no major theological issues and I am learning that I need to visit regularly and be mentored. I am immature not because I don't study enough, but because I do so on my own without the grounding of other believers except for the internet. I have finally begun to turn that around this last week, and I now know I need to be mentored in a local church to be a teacher and pastor in service to the Body. Thank you for pointing that out, it made me have to address a real problem.

Let me pass on some brotherly advice... I have been in the church and serving our Lord and master for over 50 years... I have a different perspective than most and it is not to boast... I started going with my folks to church at the age of seven, and I didn't join until the age of 22... I have known many preachers among our brethren and one thing I have learned from most is they don't go it alone.
Most I know have had fathers in the ministry and they thank the Lord for sending them... There is always a mentor, and brethren lacking one are imho, missing out on the guidance, direction, companionship and understanding of those that blazed the trail before them... If you don't have one, find one... Take his correction and leadership to heart... He's been in the trenches... Never think you are smarter!... You may be by knowledge but by experience you are found wanting... He has walked the walk and he has talked the talk... You are a young man... Make sure the one you feel the Lord has drawn you to with much prayer is not a novice.
I'm sure there are a lot of brethren on here that can tell you the same thing... That had someone who took concern of their spiritual welfare... This is the only way I know that you are going to grow... Also make absolutely sure you find a mentor that is sound in doctrine... Then in teaching you, you will be able to teach others... Then you can blaze your own trail and be a mentor to another young man down the road... There is always a preacher behind a preacher if you look close enough... I sure brethren on here can tell you the same thing... I just beat them to it!... Brother Glen

I would say that while am a person who sees the signs and wonders gifts ceasing as in Acts , do still see God Himself able to do healings and miracles, but rarely, and its Him doing them directly, no person gifted now to do them!
Real question to me is wither one still revelation as still coming forth from God now, or if there is a closed canon!
The problem is that we make a rigid stance on either view of it still existing or not, but we need to discern that there are among those who say it still goes on heresieslike Wof, 5 fold ministries, restored prophets and Apostles, and yet many deny those as being wrong even among those see it continuing. Also, even among those like me who see it no longer does, still hold to God at times for his own purposes can still heal and do miracles!
I would suggest taking some time to go threu the Bible in the main doctrines of the faith, so suggest getting grounded into say Romans, and then restart to have your spiritual questioning after doing your own personal studies!
And I think that's the main line of confusion on this topic. Continuing gifts is not the same thing as continuing miracles, but the two are often conflated.
The 2 main dividing lines to me on this topic would be does one hold to additional revelations from God that would be addition to scriptures, and are their those still gifted as Apostles were to heal and do miracles, as to me that would be what believing in they continued means!
As I would be one who sees that the apostolic usage of the gifts ceased for today, but God still at times does do miracles and healings Himself!

It's a good point, and I haven't quite thought that through. I believe during the Acts period some were given a word of knowledge from God, specific to their church or to their small environment, which didn't make it into the Canon, but was definitely revelation. I believe something similar might happen during the Tribulation with the 144 thousand witnesses sent from God. I don't think that's happening today, though, or will happen during the rest of the Church age.
I'll have to give this more thought, however.
