Is GOP Still a National Party?

By Patrick J. Buchanan

As President Barack Obama delivers his inaugural address to a nation filled with anticipation and hope, the vital signs of the loyal opposition appear worse than worrisome.

The new majority of 49 states and 60 percent of the nation Nixon cobbled together in 1972, that became the Reagan coalition of 49 states and 60 percent of the nation in 1984, is a faded memory. Demographically, philosophically and culturally, the party base has been shrinking since Bush I won his 40-state triumph over Michael Dukakis. Indeed, the Republican base is rapidly becoming a redoubt, a Fort Apache in Indian country.

In the National Journal, Ron Brownstein renders a grim prognosis of the party's chances of recapturing the White House.

...

The Republican "lock" on the presidency, crafted by Nixon, and patented by Reagan, has been picked. The only lingering question is whether an era of inexorable Republican decline has set in.

I see you are back to posting links with no excerpts or opinion added. I don't like to pollute my PC with leftie link cookies, so perhaps you could, y'know, give us the gist of the article in a few quotes ?

Vdare is a quite conservative website.

I edited it to provide a portion of the column.

Then put some quotes up. We've been thru this before. You have a good brain, apply it.

I don't know why you would care anyway, Ken, as a socialist, why bother looking at conservative sites or caring if there is a GOP left. Your guy won.

I think this is a very astute article. I for one think that the GOP is dead, in the long term.

I honestly don't know how the GOP can recover. And, no, Sarah Palin won't do it. She's quite popular among the GOP base, but the base isn't enough to win.

As a pro-life American, I see dark days ahead for the pro-life movement unless the pro-life minority in the Dems speaks up.

I am amazed Ken is reading Pat Buchanan. He makes me look like Ralph Nader.

Me, I am looking at Bobby Jindhal, and folks like Sarah Palin. Obama will have to silence his critics, and maybe there won't be a shift in 2010. I don't expect his ideas to work, and I expect a huge BHO hangover coming up. But I have no doubt this guy can fight real dirty.

We can hope he over-reaches. Remember, Carter had a dem majority, and he was creamed after only one term.

I don't think Obama will be able to silence his critics, he will have to be effective or he won't get a second chance. He will always have a huge force against him because of his stance on certian positions but if he can be effective he will get the majority vote.

Carter was a victim of the Ford Administration. Ford left him with record inflation and an economy that was so bad no president could have survived. Kind of like what Bush left Obama. Plus carter had the hostages in Iran which rubbed salt in the wound. Carter was so unpopular Reagan could have just mailed out bumper stickers and beat him.

I hope you are correct and that the evil of conservative economic policies never regains sway in government again in the United States of America.

I think this is sadly revealing of your "my way or the hi way but lets all talk about bringing people together" hypocrisy.

Yeah, I have noticed a lot of conservatives on this board really acting like they want to make nice with us progressives.

So much for bipartisanship!

Conservative economic policy isn't "evil" per se. In some aspects, it has failed. That doesn't make it evil, just ineffective.

I have had doubts about the Republican Party lately myself. Only because they are going too far to the left. That's why I have voted for 3rd party presidential candidates since 2000. Incidently, I voted for Pat Buchanan in 2000. Its a shame he wasn't allowed in the debates with Bush & Gore. He would have made both of them look stupid & wouldn't have pulled any punches.

The way I see it is, it doesn't matter if you are heading 85 MPH toward the edge of a cliff with the Democrats or if you are heading 55 MPH towrard the cliff with the Republicans. What we need is to change our direction 180 degrees.
