Yeah, those big oil and energy liberals.
"1. Since oil is a national security/economic interest why has the government be bullied by environmentalists and not built new Refineries and drilling stations?"
Profits? Investing the money that would go towards building refineries into controlling other alternative energy forms that would truely be afordable to the consumer and not easily regulated and controlled by them. Ensuring the wealth of the elite by keeping us slaves to them?
Think they would like it if we found an energy source that we consumers could easily make ourselves in our own local communities like alcohol or hydrogen and bypassing their control over the market and our lives?
"2. Why are there no backup plans "just in case" of a natural disaster?"
Profits? Same as above.
"3. Why have gas prices been allowed to rise and rise and rise without any serious action? Why have they waited until now to take even a token action?"
Profits? Same as above.
Could not have said it better myself. Everything always boils down to profit.

Sure, they don't care if little old ladies freeze to death or children die from hunger. It's all about profit and keeping us hooked on their products at all costs and by any means.
We could have had another source of energy that was clean easy to produce and made in our backyards a long time ago if it weren't for their deceptive control and manipulations over our minds and lives. -
Hybrids are only sellable because they are taxpayer subsidized. The people who havn't bought are paying the ones who have.
The tree and fish huggers will stop any new hydro project. They are trying to tear down the existing ones. Bird lovers and rich owners of view property stop the wind farms. Then there are the nuke haters. -
Yeah, billwald but I bet if anyone were to do an indepth investigation into the tree lovers and fish huggers they'd be subsidized by guess who?
Big Energy.
The old game of ping pong played the on backs of consumers and who pays in the long run? You and I. -
Probably, poncho, you are right again.
-
I reckon LE that if we all just freed our minds of all the earthly chatter provided by Big Media our behinds would follow and we'd find the remedies to 95% of our current problems on this here planet.

Bush is releasing some of our emergency reserve. Europe is also sending some millions of barrels of oil which should arrive in 10 days. (linkie)

I thought the backup was not with the lack of crude oil but the refining of it.
-
Was both, now it's the refining.
One of the good measures in the latest federal budget is support for research and development of biodiesel. It'll be a while before it comes into fruition, but this might be a step in the right direction. -
The decision onthe buildng of refinerys rests with the oil companies, not the Govt.
The oil companies try to let the market dictate their moves. The environmentalists have made the building of new refinery's undesirable because of the hoops they are requiring. These high costs of oil may again make the construction of new refinerys financially acceptable, but again they may not, Much of our future depends upon the undoing of many misquided environmental decisions. Radical environmentalists, lawyers and dentists are undoing America. smiley face -

Twenty years ago we were telling folks that
New Orleans was 12 feet under sea level;
that a major (latter called Category 5) hurricane
would demolish it. Yep, had to wait 20 years.
I predict that 20 years from now Aviation
Fuel (JP6) fuel will cost $1000 then dollars
a gallon. Yep, World usage of crude oil is
increasing every year. At the current usage
(zero growth assumed)the we-know-how-to-recover-it
crude oil reserves will be gone in the
middle of 2021 (strangely, the same year that
the U.S> Social Security system runs out
of money :( ).
On the bright side  the US
has enough coal reserves to polute the whole
world for another 120 years.
The clever engineer will be designing coal
fired air transportation system -

How many of you actually own the mineral rights to your own homes?

I bet it is fewer than realize it ...

4. Blame whoever is responsible for not bulding additional petroleum refining capability.
5. Blame whoever or whatever is responsible for not processing oil shale.
6. Blame those who continue to buy gas guzzlers. Probably the worst by far are the pleasure boats.
7. Also note that much of our garbage comes from products made from petroleum, plastics for example.
