Other than repenting and believing in Jesus as the Son of God, are there any doctrines that Jesus taught that one must believe in order to have a relationship with Him?

Yes. Repentance from sin and Faith toward God must also have acceptance of the deity of Jesus. Not holding that doctrine = not truly saved.

Perhaps it should be understood that 'believing' is not simply mental acknowledgement, but it involves trusting Him with your life -- it is a life decision, not simply an agreement, even as to His deity.

Although I heard many of Jesus' words and believed them, I let myself become sort of a "hearer" only. I used to just do what any reasonable religious man said to do, trusting that they knew the will of God for me. I even began to "listen" to the World's ideas about things. It was when I got back to the scriptures and focused on what Jesus said to do, that things started to fall into place and make more sense. I had reached a point where I began to think that his commandments were sort of grievous to me. I did not understand love and I was letting my sinful man have his way. Don't get me wrong, religious men were trying to help, the World was cruel, but I was just trusting them too much. At any rate, it's all the Grace of God and his working in me to continually draw me to His Son. He is faithful.
Joh 14:23 Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my word: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him.
Luk 8:21 But he answered and said unto them, My mother and my brethren are these that hear the word of God, and do it.
Luk 6:27 But I say unto you that hear, Love your enemies, do good to them that hate you,
Joh 15:12 This is my commandment, that ye love one another, even as I have loved you.
1Jo 5:3 For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous.
So to me, just believing that Jesus is Lord, just waiting for heaven and then not doing what he said does not strengthen my part of this new relationship. I have a responsibility in this relationship. Do what he said to do.
This is where (I think and hope) I will find that Peace that passes understanding that I desperately desire.
It's very understandable too, considering who it is that sought us and bought us and calls us his own.

Our Sunday School lesson was on this today. Very good topic. We were in the book of James.

Dave, you cannot really obey, and love (which is the commandment), unless it is Christ Himself operating in you and through your via His gracious Holy Spirit. It is nothing you can do yourself. Please read Romans 8:8-9

The reason I ask this question is on the threads on this board it appears that everyone has various checklists - to be a fundamentalist, to be a Calvinist, to be an Arminian, to be a conservative Christian, etc. This seems to have evolved over the past 2000 years of church history.
Yet it appears in the gospels that Jesus talked about two kinds of relationships summed up in "love God" and "love your neighbor".
Have we systematized ourselves out of the priority of these relationships, or is that simply a Baptist Board phenomenon? -
I am very much a part of this relationship with the Father. ;)

This "ministry" is every momment of every day and it is "to" every person I meet. I don't need to search for a ministry or worry that I am not a leader in the church. It takes all my heart, soul, mind and strength to continually do these commandments. This to me, brings full time ministry to even the "least" believer. The greatest Pastor and the least believer are subject to these commandments.
Just thinking...

The best one i know of is a Heart Knowledge. Everyone has a head knowledge, not many have a total heart knowledge......

There is a saying that I am rather fond of...
"There is only 18 inches between heaven and hell."
Translation: The distance from the brain (head knowledge) and the heart (heart knowledge). Anyone can know that Jesus was the Son of God, but to know that Jesus is God incarnate, that He is the Lord and Savior of your life, is a whole 'nother bucket o' fish.
Just a thought. Pass it on!
