This is the best summary I've found and it comes from the washington Post.
At Height of Vietnam Bush Picks Guard
Washingtonpost.com: At Height of Vietnam, Bush Picks Guard
It was May 27, 1968, at the height of the Vietnam War. Bush was 12 days away from losing his student deferment from the draft at a time when Americans were dying in combat at the rate of 350 a week. The unit Bush wanted to join offered him the chance to fulfill his military commitment at a base in Texas. It was seen as an escape route from Vietnam by many men his age, and usually had a
long waiting list.
Bush had scored only 25 percent on a "pilot aptitude" test, the lowest acceptable grade. But his father was then a congressman from Houston, and the commanders of the Texas Guard clearly had an appreciation of politics.
Staudt and other Guard commanders insist no favoritism was shown to him. But others active in Texas politics in the 1960s say
the Texas National Guard was open to string-pulling by the well-connected, and there are charges that the then-speaker of the Texas legislature helped George W. gain admittance.
In addition to Bush and Bentsen, many socially or politically prominent young men were admitted to the Air Guard, according to former officials; they included the son of then-Sen. John Tower and at least seven members of the Dallas Cowboys.

[emoji38]. Doesn't prove his father got him in the National Guard. Speculation is proof of nothing.

I don't care what his war record was.
John Kerry is a traitor.

I don't want to discredit it out down anyone who got a purple heart. But I will point out that it's not too hard to get one. A buddy of mine got one when a grenade was launched into our compound. I was closer to the detonation than he was, but he got nicked by shrapnel.
When I say nicked, I mean that literally they put a band-aid on it. That's it. Yet since he bled, he got a people heart.
I feel the need to interject here that I am not upset that he did. I helped him get it with a sworn statement.
Also, it's not too uncommon for someone to write their own award. As long as they are doing it under orders of their Superior, I have no issue with it. (Except the fact that the Superior is shirking)

John Kerry got 2 purple heats for self inflicted wounds and one for a bruise. Kerry was specifically denied his first PH by his commanding officer, yet he ended up with one anyhow.
Those are proven facts.

Only because he wasn't a far-right Republican extremist.
But stay in your ignorance.
The day of Trumpite Reckoning is at hand.

I
I'm just saying that's what it meant at that time to join the Guard.
My friends would readily admit that not try to claim they were acting patriotically as Bush did.
Why did your friends join the Guard?

My assessment is that McCain lost that election when he picked air-head Sarah Palin as his running mate.
She clearly was not qualified.
In fact, when she was Gov. of Alaska it was her husband who actually was calling the shots.
