Ken Ham and Bill Nye are about on the same academic level. And while Bill Nye trashes Ham's position, Ken Ham has trashed faithful Christian expositors of God's word like James Montgomery Boice, Gleason Archer, etc.

If by trashing you mean holding to a literal, ex nihilo, six day, creation then he's in good company e.g. John Whitcomb and Henry Morris. In other words, Dr. Ham isn't just pulling his position out of his ear. The Young Earth v. Old Earth debate is one of long standing.
