Looking for a college

So you don't think I should even think about being a missionary/pastor without hermenutics and homiletics?

No.

Hermeneutics is necessary. Homiletics is necessary only if you sense a calling to the preaching work.

Take the toughest courses you can. Learn to read well, write well, and above all, think well. Take logic and philosophy.

Major in something you can get a job with as well as a ministerial/theological major. Bivocational ministry is necessary in some instances, though we all wish it were not so.

Most mission boards I am familiar with do require some kind of training in Bible and some other things. Contact some mission boards and ask them about their requirements.

Homiletics is of benefit anytime communication is necessary. It is helpful in speeches, sermons and Sunday School lessons.

I believe the Squire looked at the young man's goals. In Moldova, James would be either formally or informally teaching and training workers for The Field. There is an art and science to preaching. Art depends on the amount of innate talent a man is given by God. Some men are regular da Vinci's in the pulpit. Others are not. However, there is also the science or craft of preaching aka homiletics. God has called many a man who is otherwise endowed with only a modicum of talent. However, if that man gets a firm grasp of the science of preaching, he will do a craftsman-like job in the pulpit.
I like to think of it in terms of flying. I have heard many a man who has a message to preach. He takes off in Denver to fly to San Francisco. But his route seems to go by way of Dallas, Kansas City, and Portland, Ore. He then proceeds to circle Sacramento for awhile before landing at SFO. All of which could be alleviated by a glancing knowledge of homiletics.

Hermeneutics just boils down to knowing how to rightly divide the Word of God.

Clear Creek Baptist Bible College in Pineville, KY isn't bad either, though I'd give the nod to Boyce.

I suggest William Carey College in Hattiesburg, MS. It is a small but growing SBC school in a decent sized small city and only a 2 hour drive from many metro areas (New Orleans, Mobile, Jackson, Baton Rouge).
The schools current president is also a man of God who served for many years in the pastorate before becoming dean of the religion department and an instructor. I took a couple of classes under him and left the school with a LOT of respect for him.

And, i will confess, i am an alumni of this institution.

Unreal. Just went to Carey's website and was amazed. I had no clue this existed (little school, 2600+ students, 100 years old!!!)

Then to Clear Creek Baptist College and WOW! What impressive facilities, credentials and programs.

And Boyce Bible College . . MAN I am truly get an eye-opener in this.

Did you understand that Boyce Bible College is a "school" of The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, KY? (I am sure you did!).

It has made great strides since Al Mohler's presidency began in the mid 1990s. It went from a little Bible institute type thingy to a full-fledged, degree granting, regionally accredited institution.

Now, a young SBC student (or any student for that matter) can come straight out of high school, go to do a BA/BS at Boyce, stay on campus and do the MDiv, and stay all the way through to the PhD if they had a mind to do so. And besides all that, the tuitions is one of the most reasonable around!

This is also FYI! Five of the six SBC seminaries have BA/BS programs now. All are regionally accredited and doing well.

I have one of my best friends who did some translation for the HCSB/OT who is doing college recruitment for one of our seminaries.

The SBC has an accelerated MDiv program. If you have a Bible or Religion major from an SBC college you can do a shortened MDiv degree and specialize in a particular area if you wish. It is a really sweet deal and worth checking on for a young student.

Always learning new things. SBC was always a kin of satan where I came from and have found out that most of what I "knew" was untrue.

But then, such is MOST of life!

Butting in here again a little later in the topic, but I second Rhetorician here. Speaking from experience, any language training you get in high school, college and grad school will help you in language study. Examples: Japanese reads right to left like Hebrew, and puts the verb at the end like Latin, so I had a head start on other students at the language school. (Of course then there were those 1000s of squiggly Chinese characters to learn.)

From what I read, Moldovan is in the Indo-European family of languages, so Latin, Greek and even English will help you learn it.

Moldovan is Romanian. Moldova is a slice of Romania annexed by Stalin after WW2. The only major difference in the languages is the alphabet used. Romanian uses the latin, Moldovan the cyrillic. Romanian is a Romance language just like French, Spanish, et al..
