There are a number of stores in town that have the almost nude magazines at eye level with my kids. They think people shouldn't be allowed to have pictures taken in their underthings. I didn't explain that most people just consider them clothes or swimwear, so I'm letting them write letters to these places telling them their thoughts, and I'll include one of my own.
The two main ones out here are dairy mart and Buehler's. Who else has one, or a different one, in their town and wants to say something? We could start with writing/speaking to the individual stores, and then when they don't listen (lol) move up the chain of command from store managers to individual franchise owners to the actual owners, that way by the time we're done everyone involved will be familiar with our requests.

Magazines in stores

One other thing. I just want to see if I'm the only one who is bothered by this or if others are too. Don't you hate going to a store to buy personal clothing and you have to do it in front of a bunch of men and women? In our local Wal-Mart the women's underclothing is along the aisles where people walk, DIRECTLY across the aisle is the men's shirts and pants and jackets. The men's personals are tucked away in the middle of the men's department, the girls in the back of the girls department, and the boys in the back of the boys department.
Hmmm. Why do you think that is?
Gina -
Did you ever notice it is always the sexy underwear that is displayed closest to the aisle? Men are attracted by sight.
On your other problem with innapropriate magazines displayed where children can see them.
In my town, we got petitions signed and presented them to the City Council. An ordinance was passed and now the stores that sell these magazines have to keep them under the counter.
The only way a man can purchase one is to ask for it because they are no longer visible.

Ug... Our Wal-Mart has vulgar looking women's underwear hanging right across from the toy department! (Feather trimmed bras and nighties that are see through) The manager said that store layout is determined by corporate and there's nothing he can do about it. He's a Christian man, too. You've inspired me to write corporate and express my concerns today!
I don't go into store like Dairy Mart because there's really none around here so I'm not aware of what is going on. I use the pay at the pump feature at the gas station but I'll bet some questionable magazines are in plain view inside.

Do you suppose we might add a complaint about all the Chinese stuff they import, too, being that China is a big human rights violator (as webmaster posted below.)
Couldn't hurt, IMO. -
On imports...it's what saves people money. They could put banners out saying "this product was made in a sweat factory where we beat little children to make them work faster" and people would turn a blind eye if the alternative meant paying a dollar more for the same product.

I don't really pay much attention to the magazines. I don't buy them, thus my attention isn't drawn to them. But I'm not offended by the sight of a woman in a bikini, either, so . . .
That said, if you don't want your children looking at women in bikinis (though it seems like they have a keen sense of appropriateness!), you should, of course, request that they place the magazines closer to adult eye level, lest you take your business elsewhere.
And I guess I'm no more embarassed choosing or buying lingerie in front of people than I would be bringing a box of tampons up to a cash register.
Your first complaint I sort of understand, but I don't get the second one. :( -
My local Ralph's covers magazines like "Cosmo" with modesty panels.

I buy cute undies all the time so to be honest I really don't care who sees me doing so. Hey if my husband has no fear of walking into a store and buying the lady products I need then why should I care...it's not like people around you don't know that you have interest in that type of thing.

Actually, I'm uncomfortable when anyone stares because it's rude.
If I'm going to be deciding between something in blue or something in purple, I would rather not feel those eyes watching me, it's destracting. I have a hard enough time making up my mind without destractions. Oh well, such is life. -
What we buy or wear is between us and hubby but putting it right across from the Matchbox cars is a bit silly!
I never got an answer back from Wal-Mart.

As far as not having to shop for personal clothing in front of the opposite sex, we might be more successful if we present it as an idea for increasing sales. Write and tell the stores you want to buy their products but are too embarassed to do so, and you've talked to friends who said the same thing.
As far as magazines, I'm considering asking the managers of the stores if they'd wear the same things. So many shake their heads when they see someone come in dressed like a prostitute, but they don't mind magazine covers depicting the same manner of dress.

We have had this battle in Australia, particuarly with Petrol (gas) stations. Our government is very slow to legislate on the issue, So there is a group formed called "Federation For the Family" (Search the Christian Activism Forums here.) So far they have sent Australian Playboy Bankrupt by relentlessly hitting there advertisers.
Yes that is right the big multinational Playboy are closed down in Australia.
Penthouse and others are nearly through also.
If you are really concerned on this or other issues, please sign up for our activism forum here. United we can achieve much. -
I don't know if anyone is familiar with the American Decency Association since they are not particularly Baptist, but they have been trying to get Wal-Mart stores to either quit selling Cosmopolitan magazines and others like it or to cover them. The ADA has had some success at the local levels.
So I would suggest that if you are offended you talk to the local store manager as well as send a letter to the national headquarters.
