Brother Bob,
While what you have suggested and what blackbird has suggested all sounds good and yes it would work to a point, what we are asking for is structure.
If two people were going to debate each other in college, would it be a free for all or would there be rules, guidelines and such in place? Would the audience be allowed to join in the debate on campus?
What you and blackbird has suggested are not against what this thread has asked for, but this thread has taken it a step further and this in turn will allow for a more productive and Christ honoring system of debate.
It's ok if you don't want to join in but that shouldn't stop others from wanting and using a system of sturcture to learn from.
As far as the time the Moderator would have to allow for this, it wouldn't be any more or less time they are already spending here on the BB. I am sure also that if needed there would be any number of people that would step up and volunteer to help with these debates. The moderator in this case would only have to make sure the time limits and reference limits were in place, and then the topic post would be posted.
If given the chance, with an openmind a moderator would be able to go to the site I referred to and see how it works smoothly. I could even get a moderator from that forum to email a modertor/admin here is they need more information.
I suppose, the only reason I am fighting for this is because all the threads that get heated shows very little of our Christian side. A lot of the time it has so much negative thoughts and posts in it that I find it hard to read and I am a Christian. Can you only imagine what a non-Christian thinks when they hit a thread like that.
Wouldn't it be nice to be able to debate topics without all the bashing and negative posts?
This reminds me of what the board used to be like before Andrew bought it. I wondered outloud on this board, why the BB didn't run vBulletin, it was still running on that old forum software which was hard to keep up with, hard to search in etc.. everyone thought the BB was just fine that way it was, and now ask anyone if they would rather go back to the old system? I bet the number of people would be few.
I can understand people don't like change, but sometimes, change is good. Sometimes it causes us all to grow, which is what these debate threads would do.
This all is of course, my opinion. I don't own this board and can't do anything but support it no matter what the format.

BBob, -
I understand they have a life outside of the BB, but the time needed is small. It's not like there will be 100's of debates going on. On the other forum, each user is limited to one debate at a time. He/She can't debate alcohol and KJVO at the same time.
The time issue isn't a kill point. Also, like I said before I am sure there would be people that would step up to help with this process if needed.
Jamie -
What would it hurt to set this up and give it a try. If it don't work, close it down.
Nothing ventured... nothing gained...

IOWS, develop a real debating forum, with the same rules we used in High School...
Set up an online debate.
Only a couple mods would be needed. -
I am curious how time limits would work online...
Would it be something like limiting post lengths...
Jamie, pm me the link to the other site, I am curious to how it works. -
Jamie -
Just looking at the rules I like the way they set it up..
It would certainly be more scholarly than the way we debate now..
It would force debaters to actually articulate their positions...
Instead of just posting URLs, and saying, "There.. that proves I'm right"
I think we all could learn...
Plus it would be nice to relearn how to properly debate others...
True apologetics.
I will look around the site more.. -
WOW!!!
That one debate is deeply intense!!
If we had those type here, all would be edified! -
Also, they firmly believe in what they are saying and it shows in their research, style of writing, and their debates.
That is why I think it would do the BB a world of good to have something like that here. Think of the number of people that would learn something, and the debators can feel good about teaching others and expanding their knowledge.
Jamie -
Exactly...
I still haven't found anything in the link you sent me that would keep you from posting it here publically... -

I have been having an email discussion about wine with a friend of mine (a pastor) he believes in the abstinence position.
We are both good friends and I told him I wanted to be challenged.
I told him it was like when I mount a shelf on the wall. I then put pressure to see if it holds up.
SSometimes with our doctrine we need to test it to see if it holds up.
A good Christ honoring discussion with someone who believes differently than you do is a great way to make sure that your doctrine holds up to pressure.
The problem is when people don't treat you as Christians and make personal attacks it is not edifying.
Also when you get a couple of people who are capable of a good solid debate it often gets ruined by a wisecrack that a third party breaks out.
Often you end up with 5 discussions in the same thread.
Instituting moderated debates would not take away what we have now, it would only enhance.
Also I would like to see Baptist vs other denominations as well.
Again, it is to test our belief. See if it holds up. -
Well of course it would hold up ... we are BAPTIST...
Oh, that was one of those wisecrack remarks you were talking about!!! -
Whom would we get to moderate the debates?
I suggest NOT current moderators :)
Say, I just saw Tiny's list.
Were is
PreTrib V. Post-Trib Only?
Now that one i'd like to do.
Here is Ed's way to get two arguers & one Referee*
I say 'referee' cause 'moderator' is confusing with
current roles on BB.
Say I find someone to argue Post-Trib.
He (or she) and I pick each a potential referee.
These two have to find a person willing to be the
referee AND make the 'rules' of the debate.
I say 'rules' cause they really limit the debate.
For example. If I debate defending the Pretrib Rapture
in the pre-mill position with a post-tribber in the pre-mill
postion, we could just assume we agree on the pre-mill
position and not debate it NOR some other x-mill position
such as a-mill (yes, it can lead to the pre-mill
position).
Well, anyway, I though it would be a good idea until
i started thinking deeply about it :saint:
against a fellow post-trib only -
debate "is eatin' fatback* Christian?"
* term defined:
fatback = fat meat from the upper part of a side of pork
Or would neither one of us argue about such
a serious matter?
-Ed,
:wavey: -- the Baptist Smiley
- only one hand raised at a time
- and the feet never leave the ground*
* I.E. no dancin'
