It's summer and time to do the fun learning in homeschool! The "saga of pizza" topic gave me the idea to look into different music in different cultures.
What type of music dominates in the area you live in? How does this reflect who you are?
Whatever country and whatever area you're in, can you tell us about your culture and music?
I'd especially like recommendations to a certain artist/album that you feel accurately portrays the style appropriate to where you are so we can start looking for it! :) Nothing obscure if you live in a foreign country, I want to be able to get a hold of it without jumping through too many hoops.
One other note, please don't turn this thread into an argument as my girls will be reading it.

Music in your country

We have a big following for the Today's Country genre. Over on the islands and coastal area's there are a great many summer concert series performed outside at places like the pier, lighthouse area, beaches and anywhere alot of people congregate.
There's Jazz in the Park, A Little Light Music and others that bring in the styles of swing and big band era, singers and standards, jazz, folk, etc. These are usually a good place for families to come out and bring the lawn chairs and blankets. Most are alcohol free and smoke free.
The Beach Boys will be in the area for a concert. It will be well attended. -
I live in a place "like no where on earth" (our motto last year - dumb!) and the unique music of our area is ANYTHING Country & Western. :(
Music in your country? No. Country in your music!

Sigh, with the proliferation of mass media and popular culture, it's pretty much the same anywhere in the world these days the music and the culture that comes with the music.
I guess the pervasive music culture here in Singapore is mostly American (western). And it certainly does not reflect who i am! (Maybe who i was until i came to claim Jesus as my Lord....)
But i guess it also depends on your world view. The music that really reflects me are hymns.
However, for the education of your children, it would interesting to find out more about music of other cultures.
For example, Chinese Orchestras. there are several Chinese Orchestras in Singapore and most schools have a Chinese Orchestra as a Co-Curricular Activity.
You can just type Chinese Orchestra on the search engine and there are several good sites describing the various Chinese musical instruments that make up the orchestra. Some sites have what the orchestra sounds like.
Singapore is multi-cultural. You can also try Malay Cultural Music, and Indian Cultural Music.
Hope it helps.
All the best!

We have five Christian radio stations here (1-Southern Gospel, 1-praise and worship, 2-CCM, 1-mixed). We have two hard rock stations, several country stations, and NO rap stations.

Gidday Scott,
I am not sure if it is on Cable TV in the US or not, yet Hillsong have a half hourly TV show on each week called "Life is for Living". Well worth a look. -

* Pete gets out his soap-box...
Hillsongs...ARGH! They are maybe just a TAD too prevalent. They have reached plague proportions and are even cancerous in some Churches. Some have a playlist of Hills, whole Hills, and nothing but Hills...It wouldn't be too bad if they were all up to the same standard (they do have some very good ones), but some of the vague CD-fillers they have released..ARGH!
Shout To The Lord is ok, but 4 times a day, 20 days a year at the expense of When I Survey? "It just don't add up!!"

That said, some of my favorite Hillsongs pieces are "Dwell in Your House," "Forever," and "Emmanuel." Simply awesome songs! -
OK, now I have that out of my system...My favourite Hillsongs are Holy (Lord You Are So Holy), Blessing Honour, Holy One Of God, In The Silence, This Kingdom, and a couple of others.
