Though largely unheeded, the warnings of fundamentalists that employing worldly methods in evangelism will result only in corrupting the church are waxing prophetic.
Emulating a popular Freudian gimmick often employed to plug an event, hobby, or occupation, an advertisement for a Christian ministry played on a local secular station said that their members "do it in the spirit." I heard it just this morning.

Do what in the Spirit?
If I'd heard that statement (I didn't hear it in context on the broadcast you heard) I'm not sure I'd have arrived at the conclusion you did. I may have, again, had I heard the entire thing.
I know I'll probably be blasted for this, but I just recorded a radio promotion for our church to be played during high school football, basketball and soccer games to be broadcast live. These live broadcasts have intermittent 10 second "spots" and we are one of these for a nominal fee.
Our promo said:
In the game of life, you can know the score before the highlights on the news. Here at Skyline Baptist Church, we're learning how to play the game God's way. For more info, call 334-6729.
Consistently, we've seen a good response in the community to these kinds of spots. We don't advertise on Christian radio because real church growth is not "transfer" growth from other churches. We want to reach unsaved and unchurched people. By and large, non-Christians don't listen to Christian radio (although it DOES happen).
Aaron, I believe I know you well enough to guess that the smiley face at the top of your thread title is not meant to say that you think commercial you heard is funny. -
It was played during the Steve Harvey show on HOT 103 Jamz. http://www.kprs.com/dj_steve.shtml (A coworker listens to that station at work. That's how I heard it.)
So, what do they do in the spirit? Worship, of course, but the innuendo is obvious especially to the audience of that station.
But I really didn't have to explain it, did I? -
I don't suppose that was First Baptist Church at Corinth, was it?

Isn't he secular? He's on WBLS here, which is one of the "Urban Contemporary" stations. -

Don't presume anything, Aaron. I didn't "get it" as you said. I guess an ounce of cynicism goes along way for you, huh?

I didn't get it either....So don't feel bad. But maybe it was so obvious in real life instead of written. Maybe I was concentrating on the phrase "fruedian gimmick" what is that?
But having said that, using sex to plug a Christian event is wrong!
