Is this a good thing or a bad thing? I know nothing about the CBF other than what I have been exposed too here.
Jeff. -
I'm on the outside looking in too.
I think the significance is that the CBF has formally broken any ties (not sure there were really any left) with the SBC but is not wanting to become a convention.
The CBF is taking this step to try to become a member of the Baptist World Alliance, which won't allow a group to join if it's a part of another organization.
And the SBC doesn't want the CBF to become a member, having threatened to cut back funding if that happens. -
I've been away from the SBC for a long time, but it still boggles my mind that there are so many dually-aligned SBC/CBF churches.
I think actions like this are tiny little baby steps toward severing the umbilical cord.

Tom,
Almost every CBF church I can think of in Georgia - except the Alliance ones - is dually-aligned with the SBC.
Joshua -
How many would that be?
I'd like to find some data on this.
There are roughly 350 Southern Baptist churches here in the metro Knoxville area and some 500 in metro Louisville when I served there. I can name only a few that are dually aligned.

Glad to see them go! This is a very good thing for the SBC.

According to ABP:
-
This link
claims more than 1800 churches support the CBF financially.
Putting the two stats together, I'd say that less than 10% of CBF churches aren't aligned with the the CBF and the SBC. How a church can support both still boggles my mind - and I was in such a church for a little while.
Joshua -
Thanks.
Joshua, old habits die hard. Even if the leadership has given up on the SBC, that doesn't mean the rank and file can quite bring themselves to do it. -
After looking at their Webpage the CBF look like a good ministry to have in the Baptist World Alliance. Hopefully they will bring many to the Lord.

1800 CBF churches. 41,000 SBC churches. I would venture that less than 5% of all SBC churches have a dual alignment with another convention. That still isn't a large percentage. And not all 1800 would be dually aligned. I know many CBF/ABC and SBC/ABC dually aligned churches, though not as many as CBF/SBC.

Tom,
I think we may have been talking at cross-purposes. SBC-only churches aren't even on my radar. My comment might have been better worded "I can't believe there are so many CBF churches that are still dually-aligned."

Yup, as far as I know.

Josh, I'd agree. I don't know why a CBF church would still be SBC aligned unless there were internal politics at that church or what. Maybe they just like getting all of the mail!
-
There have been a good number of dually aligned churches over the last few years, but there seems to be a move towards becoming CBF only.
Which I think is great. Why go two ways?
