VIRGINIA BEACH, Virginia (CNN) -- Televangelist Pat Robertson said Thursday that he has prostate cancer and will undergo surgery next week to remove his prostate gland.
Robertson, 72, made the announcement on his "700 Club" television program.
Doctors said the cancer does not appear to have moved beyond the prostate, he said, and they expect him to be back on a full schedule by the beginning of March.
Robertson's announcement came a day after John Kerry, presidential candidate and senator from Massachusetts, had surgery at Johns Hopkins hospital in Baltimore, Maryland, to remove a cancerous prostate. (Full story)
Robertson is the founder of the Christian Coalition and Christian Broadcasting Network.

My prayers are with him. I believe him to be a Godly man and he will be missed by many if his surgery does not work.

I just don't get why his son doesn't lay hand on him and heal him?
;) - Jeremiah -
My daughter had cancer when she was 15. We had the Elders anoint her with oil, lay hands on her, and pray for her. Then we went to the Doctor and prayed God would give him wisdom.
After two radical surgeries, months of radiation, and a year of intense chemotherapy...the cancer was eradicated.
God can heal in any way He chooses. Sometimes through faith, sometimes through medical help. I still give God all the glory!
Sue -
With all due respect Sue,
I too wonder why Pat doesn't just "claim his healing?" After all, this is the same garbage he has preached and used to scam the gullible for years. Why hasn't God given someone on the 700 club a "word of knowledge" about his condition?
While I certainly do not rejoice that Pat Roberson has cancer, it is amazing how quickly these "snake oil peddlers" run to the doctors when they need help. All of a sudden their, "Have faith in God" theology turns into a, "Have faith in the doctors" philosophy. -
Pat Robertson is no man of God, he is a "man of Con." I wish him no harm, but he has harmed thousands and has cause the early death of many. He and others like him cost my mother more time on earth because she held onto false promises by these con men. She elected to trust in their words over the Doctor's advice. They were wrong, the doctor was right.
I have no hatred toward people like Robertson, Benny Hinn, Jonathan Edwards or other spiritualist con men. I understand fully that Satan is alive and working in sheep's clothing.
But there should be a law against the practice of medicine without a license. If a person holds a minister/healer guru as an authority higher than a Doctor, and that authority says they can stop taking their medicine, then that should be considered practicing medicine.
A doctor/patient relationship is created between the healer and the individual at that point. The State holds that religion is not able to operate in any manner proscribed by the law, therefore the State should be able to prosecute on certain grounds when death can be attributed to actions created or advised by the healer.
Pat should be getting his prostate removed behind bars in a Federal Prison hospital.
Scripture doesn't advocate "Claiming a healing", it doesn't advocate stopping medication or ending doctor's care. When did we hand over this authority to these confidence men anyway? The Church needs to step in and stand up to these murder's, it won't hurt our faith, it will only strengthen it. But it should be us that roots out the rotten apples, not the State. But if we don't or won't or can't, then the State needs to step in. :( -
After all, this is the same garbage he preaches to others on his TV show. Why not walk the talk and heal thyself, Pat?
The truth is, this guy is no man of God.
If he were a man of God, he wouldn't teach false doctrine. If he were a man of God, he wouldn't make false prophecies. If he were a man of God, he wouldn't give a platform on his show to false teachers the way he does.
The sad truth is, he wouldn't know the Bible if somebody hit him upside the head with it.
By the way, you've never answered my questions in the music forum. -

HI Postit, you said:
Jonathan Edwards was a great theologian.

Meanwhile... Praying for God to heal Pat Robertson and use this to open Mr. Robertson's eyes to the truth. -

This might seem picky, but I think that there was only one Godly Man. I often hear people referred to as "good Christians," or "godly men." I notice, though, that when a man called Christ, "good teacher," Jesus pointed out that only God was good. Interesting that we're so willing to call each other "good" when even Jesus was wary of being called that.
You said that he will be missed by many if his surgery doesn't work. Yes, I don't know how good or correct he was (honestly just hearing the man's name makes me cringe), but I hope that God either heals him or uses his trial to grow the real faith of his followers.

Benny Hinn just bears such a striking resemblance to the prototypical used car salesman. Would you trust this man with your eternal soul? . . . NOT! You mentioned Jonathan Edwards in the same sentence as Robertson and Hinn, though. The only Jonathan Edwards I'm aware of was around during one of those Great Awakenings back before the Revolutionary War. Is that who you were referring to?
You also said: "But there should be a law against the practice of medicine without a license. If a person holds a minister/healer guru as an authority higher than a Doctor, and that authority says they can stop taking their medicine, then that should be considered practicing medicine."
Absolutely! I am emotionally disabled. I know other emotionally disabled people. I can't tell you why people like us are particularly vulnerable to those who say to just stop taking your medicine, and pray in faith. Well, OK, maybe I can. I live in a conservative, fundamentalist, Bible belt part of Arkansas. Being a Christian who dares not to be able to work in this town is unbelievably distressing. Like I don't have enough guilt . . . without people all around me trying all the time to convince me that if I just had their brand of faith everything would be OK. I've tried all the brands, taken all the classes, studied the Bible so obsessively that I wound up in the hospital. I've been under a doctor's care for 21 years, since I was 14. After a while, you kinda figure out that what you're doin' isn't working. You think, . . . maybe all these hyperChristian claims are right. After all, what have I got to lose. I've known A LOT of emotionally disabled people who have been convinced by local churches to stop taking their meds. That never lasts long. They really need their meds.
You said: "the State should be able to prosecute on certain grounds when death can be attributed to actions created or advised by the healer."
I don't know about that. That sounds like it would give too much control of religion to the State.
You said: "Pat should be getting his prostate removed behind bars in a Federal Prison hospital."
I don't care where he gets it removed. But, couldn't people keep their prostate problems private. I just don't feel like I know Pat well enough to be discussing his prostate in mixed company.

Can you understand why the church is loathe to say much on the subject publicly? Jesus was known for His healing. Nonchristians would think that we really didn't take Christ Jesus too seriously if we attack these men for following what sounds to them like what He said, sounds like that because they haven't had the advantage of sitting under good, biblical teaching.
Whew! That's all. CJ -

If the modern "name-it-and-claim-it" faith healing of Pat Robertson, Oral Roberts, Benny Hinn, Bob Tilden, et al, is real, then it will be verifiable and shown without a shadown of doubt.
For Oral to build a hospital and Pat to forego healing and go under the knife seem mute testimony of their own opinion of "miraculous gifts".
But I am a 55 year old male and would not wish prostate cancer on anyone.
Okay, maybe Saddam and Osama, but nobody else. -
Is "Bob Tilden" the Robert Tilden that used to give out 'prayer cloths' for donations and ask people to put their hands on the tv screen and pray with him? Whatever happened to him?

I do not try to put God in a box and tell Him who He can and cannot use. The Holy Spirit, through Pat Robertson, has led many thousands of people to accept Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior.
He can work through anyone He chooses. Just because it does not agree with YOUR choice; doesn't mean it can't and doesn't happen.
I see so much hatred and bitterness on this board anymore. It is beginning to sound more like a Godless board than a Christian board.
Whether you like Pat Robertson or not has nothing to do with the fact that God loves him and your job, as a Christian, is to pray for him.

He's a false teacher. Period.
Can God use false teachers? Yes.
Does the Bible condemn false teachers. Yes.

Mike,
I sense a critical spirit in your post. I think we all on this board should have this verse ever before us, maybe even printed out and hanging on our monitors. I know I need it! ;)
And the Lord’s servant must not quarrel; instead, he must be kind to everyone, able to teach, not resentful. Those who oppose him he must gently instruct, in the hope that God will grant them repentance leading them to a knowledge of the truth. -- 2 Timothy 2:24-25 (NIV) -

That's actually a very good record.
[qb]This is the second time you have reminded me of this in threads that have nothing to do with music. I did not answer you; but I can. I just get tired of talking to brick walls and I chose to stop.[/b]Click to expand...
You said several things about me there that you really need to back up or apologize for. -

Yeah, call me crazy, but I think the Bible commands us critique the teachers and their doctrine.
