Obama Refuses to support Hong Kong democracy

WHILE REFUSING TO SUPPORT HONG KONG'S DEMOCRACY, OBAMA STRONGLY CONDEMNS ISRAEL


Hong Kong's pro-democracy demonstrators protesting China’s attempts to quash their rights to self government appear to be only the latest pro-Western group forsaken by the Obama administration. Meanwhile, its high volume criticism of Israel continues unabated.

First, Hong Kong. Protests in that former British colony have grown massively since they started last Friday. The demonstrators-- and, if opinion polls are correct, also the overwhelming majority of Hong Kong People-- oppose the communist government in Beijing’s refusal to stand by provisions of the 1984 Sino-British Joint Declaration that spelled out the conditions under which Hong Kong would be governed after its return to China from Britain. Hong Kong’s constitution, or Basic Law negotiated as part of the of Joint Declaration, guarantees Hong Kong’s right to govern itself on all non-defense or foreign affairs matters through 2047.

Protestors claim that China reneged on that agreement in June when it announced that Beijing would decide which candidates would be permitted to run in the 2017 elections to pick the self governing city’s next Chief Executive thereby insuring it would have full control over all the candidates that seek that office.

As up to a quarter million protestors peaceably took to Hong Kong streets demanding freedom last weekend, neither President Obama nor any other senior administration official said anything at all. It wasn’t until Tuesday that the US consulate in Hong Kong got around to issuing its first statement and it sided not with the protestors or their freedom cause:

 

Is there a struggling democracy anywhere that the Obama administration will support?

 

Exactly what action would you propose he take? Threaten China over a purely internal matter? Nice spin by the way. You make it sound like he turned someone down when all he really said is that we are staying out of it. Let the grown ups make the decisions so we can avoid World War 3 okay. Thanks.

 

Hong Kong is a hopeless cause. China will do to these citizens what they did in the Time-to-die Square.

Besides, it would be stupid to anger the country who pays our bills; hacks our cyber space secrets; and treats its comrades worse than we treated slaves, gays, women, illegals and the Indians, from whom we stole this country and banned to reservations. And where in this world would Obama get money to jet set around the world while a large portion of Americans struggle to keep a roof over their head and food to feed their families?

 

A statement in support of Hong Kong and democracy would be good.

 

When we stop supporting our democratic ideals without a word, we are truly lost.

Supporting our ideals in our own country is one thing, trying to enforce them across the globe is the epitome of arrogance and it has historically turned out badly for us.

I got it. There are a lot of people like you. People who like what they have, but don't want to share it...not even with a word. Afraid of their own shadow. Selfish to a fault. That's what will eventually bring this country down.

You foolishly are implying that we should somehow meddle in Chinese politics while somehow trying to make this an Obama thing (because you are unhealthily obsessed with him). All the other stupid stuff about me not wanting to share democracy like it was the gospel or something makes no sense whatsoever. Why are you saying I'm afraid of my shadow, why do you think I'm selfish? Because I keep my democracy to myself? What does that even mean? You've really lost it.

I can see you now standing on a street corner asking passerby's if they've "heard the good news about democracy today."
