This past Sunday our church voted to adopt the ESV as the bible we will use in the pews and for preaching. Since the Sunday school material we use uses different versions according to the writers preference we can't change that now can we! I ordered the bibles today and they should be here in a couple of days! We had been using the NIV, which is fine translation, but since the ESV came out it has been my prefered bible translation.

The ESV is the pew Bible in my Church as well as the Bible the pastor preaches from. There is also quite a bit of NASB holders.

Today my pastor used the King James Bible. Last week he used the King James Bible. Last month he used the King James Bible. Last year he used the King James Bible. Last...well you get the point. I thank God that I don't have to vote on which Bible I'm going to use the next time I go to church. A curious question, if the church uses the ESV(now), does that mean the church is going to buy the members a ESV to follow along as the pastor reads or is that left up to the member. Also, if the church switches next month to NASB or NKJV, would the church buy those versions for the members? It could get costly.
Why are KJV-onlyists so cynical about the intelligence of churchgoers? The members are probably quite able to follow along in whatever Bible they are carrying, whether it is an ESV or not. If I could do it at age 6, certainly a congregation of adults should have no problem.
If you have a problem following along with the preacher because he uses a diff. version than you do, simply just listen as he reads. As the Word was meant to be heard in the first place. Then when you get home reread the passage in the translation you have. How often do we actually think of the message after we leave the sanctuary? This would be a good practice to get into even if everyone in the church uses the same version.

Although my church uses the ESV, I am sure that others in the church have something else. Some people (in my opinion, usually just a handful) can be confused if they cannot follow along, especially when the church is standing during the Bible reading for the morning. I think it's a good idea for the church to primarily use a single version, the pastor should not be confined to that one version while preaching, so long as he states what version he is referring to.

Listening to how KJVO describe following alone in another Bible version is like watching an informerical for brushing your teeth. All the actors try to brush with the toothbrush, but keep sticking it up their nose . . . Better switch to the headgear toothbrush the automatically guides it into the mouth . . .
If you asked my church to purchase you an ESV, then we be glad to do so. We give as many Bibles a way as we can. However, if your really that confused and your faith is really in that much paril, simply extend your hand and reach for the pew Bible, you can then follow along without the toothbrush up your nose.

I carried a KJV as a kid and for my first year of bible college, I didn't actually use it, but I carried it around! We are switching for the simple reason that the ESV is better then the KJV. As always I try and use the best. The church I pastor has many fringe believers that come from traditions that don't carry a bible to church, so since I would like to preach from the ESV the church as agreed to purchase new pew bibles so that everyone that dosen't carry a bible can be on the same page so to speak as the preacher.

I suppose one could arrive at a conclusion of sorts, considering how little a 6 year old actually followed along with any reading of any book. Your statement is just a twee bit unbelievable.

As for me, I was reading the KJV by age 4 1/2.
And since the KJV uses outdated english that the general public doesn't use, I guess that made me bilingual!!

I know several 6-year-olds who are. My cousin is one.
I learned to read at the age of two, and was reading an encyclopedia with comprehension at the age of five. My parents will be happy to confirm that. I was able to read the Bible in my four-year-old Sunday School class. Why doubt the guy?

Its much easier for children to pick up a second language then adults. However, adults retain more what they have learned if they discontinue using it.
Just a couple of thoughts. I have no idea how you learned to read when you were two, Scott. My daughter just turned two and she can bairly talk. She can say, top off, and there he is, and I love you . . . sort of. . . but she is far from understanding many words much less reading them off a page. You must be some sort of genius.
Anyway, this is a funny conversation, because usually the reverse is being argued. Usually the MVs complain that the KJV is too hard to understand and the KJV counter with the fact that there two and a half year olds are reading it. I don't think 2 and 1/2 year olds are reading much of anything, but I must run in the dumb circles.
When I was six I had graduated to See spot run, and jack and jill go up a hill and best of all, "Ann likes red", so it is doubtfull I was following along in any version, but once again, I don't seem to be the brightest one on this board.

One thing came to mind, doubt. When you get home and read another version and it says something different, you begin to doubt your pastor. If we used your plan, noone would have to bring a bible to church, because it would be sitting at home waiting for you to open it. It is nice to read word for word as the pastor reads, makes good comprehension.

It started with a book called, "I Will Teach My Dog 100 Words." My parents read to me all the time, and it was just natural to me. I spoke in complete sentences (more than two or three words) at the age of 18 months. At the age of 1 and a half, I knew my alphabet (thanks to a Christian "A-B-C-D-E-F-G, died for you and me" song.) Did the whole double promotion thing twice. Graduated at 16 - nine years ago.
It was just a natural thing for me, I guess.
