Hi Ernie -
I personally don't use outlook express but they do have a site: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/oe/
On that page there is a support center link: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?ID=FH;EN-US;oex
If you don't find help in the troubleshooting section, you may be able to click the link that says " Get Most Recent Version" and load that into your hard drive. This will often correct corrupted files. Hope this helps. -
Clint, what do you use? I use OE at work because that's what is installed. At home I use Netscape and Eudora.
OE just has too many security holes, IMO. It's also unstable, from my experience. -

Actually, rsr, my fellow geeks in here will shun me for this but I have AOL. I don't like the browser nor the search, but it's pretty cool having 7 accounts right there at the flip of a switch. They are also very stable.
I loaded 7.0 from a disc onto this hard drive and, like Ernie's OE, it froze up on me. Just refused to load. I had to completely re-install it but I was able to retain all the old files from the failing system. Thank goodness! I had a great deal of info in the filing cabinet!
7.0 also lets me carry my buddy list and address book with me now. They store it these days. That is a great convenience.
I also have a couple BaptistMail accounts for various uses on the board and I am very pleased with that system as well.
OE is installed on this computer (came with it) but I have never activated an account. I think Margie may have one on the other hard drive but I'll let her tell you. I need to leave her SOMETHING to talk about! -
I used Outlook Express as it was integrated with MSN dial-up. At that point I found it easy to use. But now that I use (don't cringe) AOL, I think differently. AOL is extremely reliable and easy to navigate.
Outlook Express had a tendency to suddenly gimp up and fail to send e-mail. It more successfully received mail. I could never find any real reason why this would happen...I used to blame the connection. -
Ernie,
Which verision of OE are you using. I have found 6.0 to be very stable, and have not had anyproblems with it. You might want to try running scandisk, or a similar program and then defraging your hard drive. I have found those simple steps often times will fix a problem.

I use (or used to use) OE version 6. For some reaason it stopped working a few days ago. I also get the "failed to load" message. I contacted my Internet provider and was told to re-install Internet Explorer. I have done this but OE still does not work properly. I was then told to contact Microsoft. Since they cost $35 (last time I looked) to fix the problem I have opted to go with another email provider. Does anybody know how to repair OE 6?

You might try going to your Start button, click on Settings, then click on Control Panel (assuming you're using Win98). Open "Add/Remove Programs" and then choose Internet Explorer. You should get a window that gives you an option to "Repair Internet Explorer"; try this and see if it fixes your Outlook.
If it doesn't, you should try uninstalling Outlook Express, and the reinstalling it.
If that doesn't work, you should try installing Eudora or some other e-mail program.... -
its probably the shortcut itself.
if you can, delete it, (if not just leave it alone)
then go to programs, Microsoft Folder
find the outlook icon,
then click it to open. if it opens,
then then drag it to the desktop,
your shortcut icon on your desktop will then work
sometimes desktop shortcuts get corrupted
if you want to get rid of the old shortcut, let me know the version windows you use and I'll post instructions
the other problem could be a problem in the registry, but we can go there another time!
if the outlook icon in the Microsoft folder does not work, you need to insert the windows disk and run a repair..
or go to the Outlook site
this is specifically for Outlook express:

Hope that helps somewhat!

Thank you all for your help. I have opted for a simple fix. I have stopped using Outlook Express and have started using Netscape for my email. Since this is not the first problem I have had with Outlook Express I feel that it will eventually continue to cause problems. Again, thanks for the help
