If nothing else, this pastor has gotten attention showing that his church welcomes those of all color. I don't approve of his method but I guess he's trying!
We have a ministry for Hispanics but it's by word of mouth. There's a S/S class and service in Spanish during our regular services. Attendance is only around 11-14 adults. The children are in with all the other kids.
Look how many people show up when there's food, ice cream, a band.... $5.00??? -
Hmmm...Shreveport isn't too far. Do they pay for driving time?
;) -
Good grief.
Pay people to go to church, aren't we supose to go to church becasue of God not worldly money?
I for one think it's sad. -
Why doesn't this black preacher take his congregation and go visit some white churches. He would save money and it wouldn't sound so much like he was interested in numbers.
Maybe if people got to know him they would come to his church for free. I wouldn't trust someone who would come to church just for money... -
Talk about being a token....
-
Hmmmmmm.....Maybe I should call that Black Preacher and pay him and his whole congregation to come to my church!!!!! Won't fix his problem but it just might be a cure for mine! hehehe
Sorry, I got carried away there for a minute.

What constitutes as white?
-
I can't answer for that preacher Saggy, but it sounds to me like he is looking at the 'skin' instead of the 'sin'.

[SaggyWoman.....What constitutes as white? ]
Saggy I do not have an answer to that question either. I have never understood why we don't just use words like "Man/Men Woman/Women Child/Children". After all, you never hear anyone saying that we had a Freckled family or Imitation Blonde visit our church last week!!!
Wonder why we feel we have to use their nationality first? Black man, Hispanic man, White woman, etc. I can understand it if they are giving the discription of a criminal that we need to be on the watch for or any time a discription is truly needed. I myself am guilty of doing that sometimes!
Besides, I have never seen a true "White" colored person, and if I did I would think I was looking at the Pillsbury Dough Boy! Wait, no, that can't be, I got an email a while back saying he had died and went on to Dough Land! hehehe

I was paid to go to church every Sunday

An idea whose time has finally come! Bribery works everytime it's tried.

I feel my family is being discriminated against. I should put in a complaint with the ACLU.

Lets see $5 an hour on Sunday. If I include Sunday School, morning and evening services I would clear about $27.50 on Sunday. $10.00 an hour for Thursday, If their Thursday is the same as our Wednesday then I would clear about $15.00. That means I make $42.50 a week, $170.00 a month, or $2040 a year for going to church. Since I am of course tithing on my income then the church gets an extra $204 a year in thithes. So if this pastor can get 10 people to take him up on his offer then the Church gets that 2040 back in the General Fund.
See its good all the way around, attendence is up and the church gets more money to pay its bills.

Well, the story does say that it was out of the pastor's own pocket, not the Church fund. Also, some have agreed to come without the money (to their credit). I read somewhere that D.L. Moody would chase children down the street with candy in hand, wanting to invite them to Sunday School. So, while I don't care for gimmicks, this is not totally without precedent and I won't condemn this pastor.

Although I've never heard of a pastor paying someone to come to church, that's not what bothers me about this situation.
What bothers me is he doesn't want just ANYone to come to his church...he is paying people to come based on their skin color. -

A local station had a story on this church last night. Membership is 4,000 and it's almost 100% black. The neighborhood is mixed and the pastor had invited, invited, invited. His 'promise of payment' did bring in white people who almost ALL refused any money. Also, the money was his own and not the churches.

"A Black preacher paying predominantly white folks to come to his predominantly black church"
Hmmm...
...I just do not understand why he would do something like that. Does his congregation predominantly agree that they involuntarily discriminate against whites? I doubt it.
In my town, Blacks and Whites go to separate churches due to tradition rather than anything else if you look at the situation on the surface.
In a closer analysis, though, I think its mainly because each set of folks does not know how to relate on a natural level with the other set of folks. All of the active members of Black and White churches in my area grew up in churches with only their race accounted for.
In my viewpoint, if a predominantly Black (or White or Hispanic, etc.) church cannot attract sinners or believers outside the race, then they may need to look at their lives and ask themselves if they relate to enough people outside their race to develop any meaningful associations to allow witnessing to come to surface.
I went to a 100% Black church while in grade school. While in college, I went to a 99% White church.
I think that, church members interested in drawing people from outside their race need to increase the number of meaningful contacts with people outside their races, not by paying them.
