As believers, I know we are not supposed to fear death itself. At least we shouldn't. Of course, the enemy may poke us with doubt from time, to time, but, in truth, we know when we draw our final breath, we will be with God! That is a given!
However, there is one question I have: While we may not fear death, do any of you fear, question, or wonder just how your own death will come about, or how you will leave this life?
Do any fear that their death will involve a lot of pain, or a long period of suffering?
Do any fear losing the ability to care for themselves?
Or, maybe losing their independence, and spending time in a rest home, or on life support?
Maybe having a stroke, and being dependent upon loved ones to make decisions for their future is a fear, or concern?
I am attaching a poll, and would appreciate your participation. I am not using this poll for anything but a spring board for conversation on this subject, so don't worry.

The fourth answer should be, "I fear losing my independance" rather than "dependance". I thought that word was spelled "dependence."

What Do You Fear Most About Death?

I believe the only response that makes sense in the poll is #3: I trust God for everything including how I'll die.

Thanks for catching that . . .

I'm less concerned about dying than how I'll die. The thought of drowning or suffocating is more than bothersome to me.

One of my favorite songs about leaving this life is Elijah, sung by Rich Mullins (2 Kings 2:11; Matthew 6:19-21).
When I leave I'm gonna go out like Elijah
With a whirlwind to fuel my chariot of fire,
And when I look back on the stars
Well, it'll be like a candle light in Central Park.
And it won't break my heart
To say goodbye.
Here is another one of my favorite recordings from Rich Mullins: Driving Without Headlights.

Thanks a Lot Tom!
People tell me all the time that you can't worry and shouldn't worry about a plane crashing. Because if it's your time, it''s your time!
Well, I don't think about it being "my time!" However, I do have great concern about it being the person sitting in 22L. It may be their time, and their misfortune could result in the untimely death of a few hundred others
Again, thanks for reminding me of one of my deepest fears in how I don't want to experience my departure!

I am not afraid of death ... but I do not like some of the processes of getting there.

I love number three - and I were 100% spiritual 100% of the time I would say that.
However, I fear being a burden to my wife and kids for months or years with no real hope of recovery. I would rather someone 'pull the plug' and let me go Home if I get to that point. -
I voted I trust God for everything including how I'll die.
However, the thought of death is scary. I am afraid that my soul will be conscious and trapped in a body it can't move for a lot longer than I anticipated at the time of death.
I'm excited about after death and being with Christ. It's the DURING death part that we have no real knowledge of. Something tells me it just can't be that easy, since death is a punishment for sin and all. -
What more can I say? Tho, I need to remind myself often this scripture says it all. -

I fear not having passed enough of my life on to future generations.

I have no fear what so ever when it comes to me personally dying. However, losing my personal independence is a genuine apprehension—but even more problematic for me is having my wife die before I do! This is honestly my biggest fear when it comes to death—can we add another option to the poll?
-
The method I fear more than death itself. I fear being trapped under a collapsed building, restrained in darkness..... Then again, God would be with me and help me in such a worse case scenario.
-
I chose the last option, although my main fear is going before seeing my children become independent and the affect that could have on them.
I long ago came to peace with the concept of death, although the longer I'm married to my husband, the longer I want to stick around.
I'd also like to accomplish more in my Christian life before going. Become a better Christian. Influence more people. Quit being so easily brought down by my own flesh. Exude more of the "Be" behaviors. Have more faith that my kids will be okay. Get to Papua for that mission trip I don't want to go on but feel I must.
Dang. I'm gonna have to live a lot longer than I thought. -
If statistics are correct, Wifey should outlast me, barring anything unforseen. My concern is how she would cope.
